LO has always been a terrible sleeper, but over the last week he has started to sleep really well at night. Down at 7.30 pm, sometimes needs re-settled a couple of times up until 10pm ish, but then generally he has been sleeping through until 7/7.30am ish - hooorah!!

However (why is it that there's always a 'but ), his daytime sleep has plummeted! He generally will sleep for 30mins around 9.30 and then 30 mins around 1pm. He still seems tired but will just not go back down to sleep.

Anyway, the nighttime sleep has obviously improved which is fab, so should I just leave his lack of daytime sleep as it is, or try and get him to sleep more?

Thank you wise mnetters

Hello, I have a 10 month old who is doing similar things to that too.

1 week ago he was waking twice at night and sleeping am and pm for 1 hour each time. Then over the last week he is waking once at night and his daytime sleeps have really changed too. Sometimes 30 mins am and pm. Sometimes no sleep in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon.

Perhaps he is settling in with his new nightime routine and I would suggest he may not need so much in the day if he is sleeping so well at night. I have come to the conclusion with my son that he is 'in transition' with his sleep at the moment. Maybe go with it and see what happens. I try to keep meals times more or less the same time and certainly bedtime to make the day as predictable as possible (for you as much as him).

My son is very mobile, almost walking and I wonder, depending on what your son is doing, whether that makes a difference. Sometimes when they achieve certain 'milestones' sleep is affected. As they get used to each change they adapt. For example when they first start to crawl they become exhausted and then as their bodies adjust they get more used to it again. They never stop changing!!!

Difficult to know, be pleased he is sleeping better at night and I am sure the day time thing will settle down. Eventually he wont sleep at all in the day, but that could be when he is a year or when he is three years old!!!!

I remember this with my three year old. It can feel like they are always changing! I guess they are! Remember how different they are now to when your baby was first born!!!!!

I hope that is helpful. You are certainly not alone. It is frustrating I would agree!!!!

Good luck!

Thanks Molly, that's really helpful to hear! My son sounds very similar to yours - he's crawling, standing, cruising and looks like he'll be walking pretty soon. His big cousin who is 14 mths is running everywhere and exhausts himself so that he sleeps two or three hours in the afternoon, so I guess that might happen eventually, or maybe not...

I think I've spent too much time reading books telling you they should be getting X amount of sleep at a certain age, and I need to relax a bit more and go with the flow as you say. Although, if he could manage to include a two hour sleep in the afternoon that would be lovely!

Hi I have a 9 1/2 month old son who is a terrible sleeper. Has been since I weaned him. Unfortunately since november hes had every bug going under the sun including chicken pox all on top of teething. We don't ever seem to get one day where he is normal and since then he wakes up everynight wanting to breastfeed as he always seems to need to pass a motion. I have tried everything to try and 'move' this but its not working. He is usually up for a good 2 hours and will not settle unless at the moment he is on his side!!! He then gets silly and won't eat during the day. He is really frustrated as he can't crawl yet so just falls flat on his face every 5 mins. Just want to know if any of you have had similar problems and whether its going to get better. His naps during the day are hit and miss too. Some days he'll go down with about 5mins of crying and others he just will not and will cry if left for hours.
