Do i let her sleep in the bouncy chair?!

Hi,

Im a first time mum with a 7 week old baby. She is a wonderful sleeper at night, does a 4/5 hour stint, wakes up for a feed and goes back down for another 3/4 hours so i cant complain. She gets up about 8am and has a nap around 9.30pm for 2 hours. This nap is in her bouncy chair that has the secret weapon - vibration! She loves this bloody chair which is a good thing however when i try to get her to have her afternoon nap (which she needs as shes yawning), she wont sleep unless it is in the chair. Ive resisted this for a 2 weeks every day i persist with trying to get her down in her basket or cot but it ends up with her not sleeping until she goes to bed at 10pm from sheer exhaustion. I've tried all of the tricks in the books but its just this damn chair that she wants!

I dont know what to do - do i let her sleep in it in the afternoon, am i doing wrong by letting this happen? Will she become so used to it that she needs it? Or do i persist and end up with a miserable baby who constantly cries?

Thanks

let her sleep in it

NimChimpsky · 16/01/2009 20:27

just let her.

it'll be fine.

fryalot · 16/01/2009 20:27

let her sleep in it.

It can't do any harm, and she's sleeping fine at night so let her have her nap where she wants it.

congratulations on your baby

Hi,

I don't know if this helps but my DS used to love to sleep in the cradle swing. He would sleep 3 hours straight in it with the swinging motion on (made me giddy thinking about it!). I used to try to turn the motion off and he would wake in an instant and I would have to turn the music/motion on again... At 4 months plus, we had to travel longhaul to see my parents for a few weeks and I panicked! No cradle swing = no nap! I even managed to track a swing down just in case. DS actually napped in the travel cot the whole time we were away... On hindsight, I wouldn't have worried too much. I think if your DD naps in it, let her. She will outgrow it soon enough and she will have to learn to sleep somewhere else... GL!

Let her use it but reduce or turn off the vibration.

Your dd sounds exactly the same as mine at that age babylove. I had exactly the same worries as you but had no choice as it was the only she slept.

She slept in that chair for her naps until she was too big for it, by then she was a little older and by then she would sleep in her cot upstairs for her 2 naps a day. She is now 14 months and still has her nap upstairs in her cot.

So dont worry

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for your replies

I dont have any friends to ask you see so i posted on here!

Mines the same - turn the vibration off and the eyes ping open!

Her routine does change a lot - she used to hate her cot, now she loves it, she used to hate noise, now she wont sleep without it (have to put the CD player on at night!) etc. Maybe you're right and this will just be another phase!

I'll let her have her afternoon nap in it tomorrow but try leaving the vibrate off and see what happens

Thanks for your help!

Hi Babylove123,
It's hard I know, I'm first time Mum to 16 week old, and agree with all what has been said above. I would add however, that they change so much and this time won't last for long so just use the bouncer chair and do what you can to get through this time, it changes in a blink. My DS would not sleep for longer than 45 mins anywhere unless it was the car seat and now he's v different!!

JoandMax · 17/01/2009 08:57

Agree with the others, let her sleep in it. My LO loves to sleep in his bouncy chair as long as we rock it quite firmly with a foot, it makes me feel dizzy just watching but he loves it!

As he got older I started putting him in his cot for naps and now he has his morning nap and longer lunchtime sleep in there but always the chair for a 20 minute doze late afternoon while mummy rocks and has a lovely cup of tea.

The main thing is she's sleeping which in turn makes a happier baby, nothing worse than a cranky over tired baby.

Mine slept in the bouncy chair for a naps til they were a few months old. It's not advisable after that because the curve of the chair can affect the spine - so my HV told me - but for now just put her anywhere she will sleep!

Thanks for your replies she had a quick snooze this evening in it - without the vibrate!

Oh and mines the same - without saying it in a bad mum way - the more violent the rock the better with her. Shes a strange girl - she likes to be jigged and everything - none of this cuddling stuff!!!

My 7 month old only napped in an automatic swing (slept at night in moses basket and then cot) but at 6 months we decided to bite the bullet and try and get her to nap in her cot three times a day. I set myself up for a difficult day but from the very first day she slept really well in her cot during the day. Now she only sleeps in her cot (or pushchair if out and about). So don't worry about it. O
