4 month old will only sleep when swaddles or in car seat. Anyone else had this problem? Shall I continue to swaddle him??

If it helps him sleep, is there any reason not to?
Do you particularly want to stop?
Some babies sleep better swaddled for a year or more.

ShinySarah · 13/01/2009 05:30

I'm fine with him being swaddled but worried I'm making a rod for my own back e.g. he's going to be 3 years old and he's kicking off because he hasn't got a blanket wrapped round him!!!

sorry to hijack shinysarah but we have the same problem, only our 4 and a half month old has started wriggling out at 3.30 in the morning! I know I need to get him in his grobag, but when I tried a month ago he started waking every 2 hours or worse... But am thinking I just have to ride it out, unless anyone has any other suggestions? Wish me luck?!

PortAndLemon · 13/01/2009 07:10

Yes, keep swaddling him. And if he's getting out of a regular swaddle, try a Miracle Blanket (marvellous invention IMO). Sooner or later he'll manage to get out of that too and you'll have to do without swaddling, but there's no need to get to that point before you have to.

DS needed to be swaddled to sleep; DD never did. All babies are different, but if you have one that needs swaddling don't worry about "making a rod for your own back".

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 13/01/2009 07:25

swaddle away. I cant see the harm. that or a grobag will help

ShinySarah · 13/01/2009 13:54

Averagemum, thank God I'm not the only one!! I have just ordered a larger swaddle as my DS is also wriggling out of his at 3 in morning and waking up!!!

nappyaddict · 13/01/2009 14:11

Why not? DS as 15 months when he stopped being swaddled.

averagemum · 13/01/2009 14:33

Where from shinysarah? I thought I'd cracked it this lunchtime by swaddling in a large cellular blanket but have just watched him wriggle one arm out - decided I'm too chicken to go cold turkey as he can jerk every 20 mins or so... Argh!

RuthChan · 13/01/2009 19:19

My DS is two months old and I swaddle him at the moment.
I actually swaddle him around his sleeping bag, so he gets the best of both worlds and sleeps quite well.
I'll deal with the wriggling out of it problem when I come to it...

ShinySarah · 14/01/2009 08:48

Hi Average mum,
I'm from Manchester, you? I'm too much off a chicken too, especially as DS has started waking through the night for an extra bottle (growth spurt me thinks)so couldn't cope with the additional wakes unless I have too I think!! My DS will wriggle out of anything, he's going to be like Houdini when he grows up!!

ShinySarah -where's you got a larger swaddle from? My DS is in miracle swaddle atm but his legs are getting too long for the foot bit.

Jojay · 14/01/2009 09:02

Scuse typos

ShinySarah · 14/01/2009 09:27

Hey,
Here's the website
www.bestforbabyonline.com
And it was a 'swaddle me micro fleece' in the larger size. I currently use the smaller one but he's busting out of it. The larger one goes up to 20lb. Hope this is a help!!!

I've just had a look on ebay and I've ordered one of these

I think they look fab - let's hope they work!

averagemum · 14/01/2009 17:17

Thanks for the links ladies! Mind you though, my boy seems to like waking up swaddled or not. It's just harder to get him back to sleep when he's wriggled out. (Big yawn).

Pearlnz · 25/01/2009 02:56

only just saw this, but yes definitely do what suits your baby!!! if swaddling works go for it. We put our boy into a Peke Moe (you can google it) when he started getting out of his swaddles and it worked a dream for us! do what suits you/!

nooka · 25/01/2009 04:22

We swaddled ds, and then left one arm out when he started sucking his thumb. Then he graduated into a growbag made by my mother. He had three of them before going into a normal bed with duvet, and we had no problem with the transitions. dd on the other hand didn't like being swaddled at all.

ShinySarah · 25/01/2009 10:04

How old did you swaddle then till?

ChocOrange05 · 25/01/2009 11:22

Sorry for hijacking thread but my DS is waking up as he is getting out of his swaddle and I saw this post. I am interested in the Peke Moe but can't find anywhere to buy it in the UK online - Pearlnz do you know if you can buy a Peke Moe in the UK?

Thanks!

averagemum · 25/01/2009 13:47

Shiny Sarah - we seem to have come up with a kind of transitional solution which works, to put ds in a grobag and then swaddle his arms with a muslin folded into a triangle, lie him on top and tuck each corner underneath him ifyswim. Hope that might help?

ShinySarah · 26/01/2009 12:42

hiii, they will ship a 'peke moe' to anywhere in the world apparently so have a lokk on their website.
Averagemum, that's an excellent idea!!How's it going so far???

OP posts:
averagemum · 26/01/2009 15:40

well, it does seem to be working in that he's not bothered by his arms flailing about and stays tucked up in it all night - but he still wakes up all the time! I think I've got to sort some sleep associations somehow. Hope all is well with your little one.

ShinySarah · 27/01/2009 06:42

Hey Average Mum, that's progress that he's not bothered about his arms flailing about but why do you think he's waking all the time? What's his eating like through the day? I also had a look on-line at the peke moe things, they look v cute!!
