dummy advice please! should I just leave things as they are?

Over the past few days my ds, 18 weeks, has gone from waking 4, 5, 6+ times a night to just one or two, which is brilliant. I can put him down awake in the night after a feed and he settles himself back to sleep (with no dummy). BUT when he first goes down he does have a dummy, which I started giving him a month or so ago. The dummy seems to have really helped - before I was feeding then rocking him to sleep, would put him down and he would instantly wake up... and feeding would be the only way to get him to sleep again (6+ times a night). Ideally I'd like to do without the dummy altogether, but am not sure how to go about it without buggering up what we've got. Then again, if I leave things as they are, will he become more dependent on it and forget how to self-settle after his night feed? I've tried encouraging him to do this when he first goes down but so far no success. Any advice would be great!

If you have seen an improvement then maybe just leave things as they are. My ds became dependent on his dummy, waking lots in the night looking for it so we took it away at 5.5 months and did cc to get him to settle himself BUT the dummy was great in the first few months for getting him to settle in his cot from awake and to help eliminate night feeds (by giving him the dummy to see if he was hungry or just wanted comfort). If the self settling does stop maybe have a rethink.
