What is 2/3/4 all about in terms of naps?

I've seen this on here a couple of times now - I'm thinking it means 2 hrs before 1st nap, 3hrs before 2nd nap then 4hrs till bedtime? DD (1yr) has naturally fallen into this routine without me knowing it was a routine, lol!
Was just also wondering what the next equivalent is meant to be for after they drop their morning nap?

Thanks!

Spot on Caz... as for when they go down to one nap, if yours are anything like my DD they just pass out - hopefully after lunch, occassionally before, [eek] and sleep as long as they need (hour and a half ish in my DDs case...) and get REALLY tired by bedtime!

And it all get's a LOT less complicated, frankly...

Sounds like basically a one-nap (after lunch) with a bit of a lie in after breakfast. It's not a rule, just guide which can help... and I'd suggest for babies slightly younger than one year anyway, by which time many are only having one nap...

how old would you expect the 2/3/4 pattern to be feasible?

PortAndLemon · 08/01/2009 11:19

IME most seem to drop down to one nap somewhere between 11 and 15 months.

Also IME, while they are two-napping the afternoon nap is mid-late afternoon but once they drop the morning nap the afternoon nap moves to early afternoon (often right after lunch).

When my DS went down to just one nap, he just cut out the afternoon one, but hasn't really changed the time of his morning one.
he sleeps at about 10am for 2/3hrs,
then doesn't sleep again until bedtime which is approx 7.30pm

I wish dd slep for that long. She's just gone down for her one nap of the day and will have between 1-1.30hrs.

I cant keep her up any longer as she starts getting very ratty and everything frustrates her.

designerbaby · 08/01/2009 12:04

Dunno really... Mrs HD. I'm not an expert, but DD was following roughly this (fell into it and it's not so far from dar Gina's timings which we had been trying to follow!) until about, oh 10 months or so, but then she was getting more and more difficult to settle for her afternoon nap (it was become more like 2.5/4/"oh shit now she doesn't want to go to bed at bedtime"). We finally dropped the mornng nap properly at just over a year. Had a few cranky lunchtimes, but she got used to it.

Does that help? Was in no way suggesting it was for everyone, just trying to answer a question

Oh, and at 3 hour naps... and all night sleeping.

Bah!

Caz10 · 08/01/2009 20:46

at all night sleeping here too!

Dd is 13mths and I thought a few weeks ago she was dropping her morning nap, but now it's back with a vengeance, so her day is roughly:

6.30 wakes
2 or 2.5 hrs awake so back for a sleep about 9am

Awake 9.30ish - 3 or 3.5hrs awake so asleep again about 1pm-ish

1.5-2hrs sleep, then up again for the rest of the day until bed at 7.30-8pm

I'm guessing that when she no longer needs the 9am-ish sleep, the 1pm will become more like 12 o'clock?

Glad to hear someone say 15mths though, a few friends have been a bit at her still having 2 naps at 1yr old.

Hi there, Sorry to make you go green and scary!! I am guessing that because he has to get up at 7am so I that I can get them all ready for school run and then because we do several am playgroups he is well stimulated to stay awake. So after lunch he is full and knackered hence the long pm nap. As for through the night it took me a while to realise that my children all have high metabolisms they need supper an hour before bed (bed at 8.30 for 1yr old 7.30 for 3 & 4 yr old)or they will wake up hungry every couple of hours (until the girls were about 2yrs old) and demand milk. My son is 12 months and he's the same. I have to admit I'm hoping the next one will conform to the same pattern!!
