Bunk beds - what age did your older DC go in the top one and shorty v regular?

Here's my problem DD1 is 4.6yo, DD2 3, DD3 5 months, currently have DD1 in cot bed without bars in the biggest room, DD2 in toddler bed in the box room. Plan is for DD1 and 2 to share with bunk beds in the biggest room, it's still not that big though.

I know it's says top bunks are from 6 years onwards though, DD1 gets up at least twice in the night for the toilet as well and am worried about her trying to get down the ladders half asleep.

Other solution would be shorty bunks, these are supposed to do up until age 11 but am worried about getting sheets to fit etc is it a pain?

Oh DD3 will go into the box room in her cot then eventually into DD2's toddlers bed (DD1's is broken and really only fit for the bin she needs a new one)

DS1 went into the top bunk when he had just turned 6 (irrc), DS2 would have been 3.

DS2 moved up to the top bunk just before the summer holidays - and was 5 at the end of November.

SK dd1 was 3 before xmas and in the summer we got bunk beds with a slanted ladder rather than a straight one as ds has had a midi sleeper from 2 and we tried him on a straight ladder and he struggled so knew slanted was the way to go. We have not had any issues with getting up and down the ladder day or night and just leave a night light on so they can see where they are going

DS3 on the other hand (still in his cot) can scale the vertical ladder on the bunk beds at almost the same speed as DS2 can (DS3 is 19 months).

He then climbs under the duvet with DS2 and kicks up a stink when I take him out and put him in his cot.......

My ds has happily slept in a top bunk (when at granny's) since he was 3.5 and even managed to go to the toilet in the night himself. that is with a straight ladder..

tassisssss · 03/01/2009 17:56

my ds, on the other hand, will be 6 in April and is won't sleep in the top bunk.

i would like ds to go into the top bunk when his wee sister is ready for a bed (preferably his bottom bunk!) and I anticipate this to be in the next few months...but the way it's looking at the moment, dd is likely to be in the top bunk first!

If it's any help, my bros and I shared a large room with bunk beds and a normal bed. We swapped round each week. I was about 5, so my bros were 7 and 3. My little bro was never left out of the rota so got to sleep in the top bunk for a week every three weeks. We're all still alive.

thanks for your replies I just have to decide between shorty and regular now, and which ones to get

Nemo - they would love the pink ones well DD1 would I would have to paint DD2's lilac as thats her favourite colour, I'm already repainting the room half pink half lilac so DD2 feels it's her room too not that she is just moving into DD1's room. They have also chosen their new duvet covers DD1 wants Disney Princess and DD2 can't decide between Scooby Doo or Wall.e
