My DD has been an excellent sleeper from the word go really, she self settles within a couple of mins and apart from an odd dummt plug we hear little from her for 11 hours, but the last couple of days as soon as you go to lay her down in her cot, whether at bedtime or nap time, she screams and clings onto you. I have tried cuddling her to sleep and then laying her in her cot, but this hasn't worked and she's started to scream again. We've now basically had to leave her to cry which we've never had to do before and she usually stops and goes to sleep within 5-10 mins. Last night she woke twice and cried but each time was asleep again within 5 minutes but she does sound like the world is ending.

Help! Are we doing the right thing in leaving her to cry. Any ideas what could be causing this sudden hatred of being laid down in her cot?

Her sleep pattern could be changing, perhaps she just is'nt quite tired enough when you put her down, try putting bed and nap times back 15 minutes.

Or, if she is bunged up, it may be that she is just uncomfortable lieing down.

She has been dog tired and can hardly keep her eyes open but she still screams when you put her down and she is (amazingly) cold free at the moment.

Have you tried leaving her in the cot but staying with her and stroking her back and gently shushing her until she falls asleep?

My ds is the same age and can be a bit reluctant sometimes but this works with him.

If you put her down asleep she'll just freak when she comes into a light sleep and finds herself in her cot.

Lexie doing the same at the moment. I thinking it's to do with her cutting her back teeth.

I have been doing the same as wasabipeanut has said. Stroking her head for a few min's and she also has this which seems to help.

Hi Lizzie,

Sorry about Lexie, but i'm pleased i'm not alone!.

I've tried stroking but she almost doesn't give me a chance she whips over and stands up with arms outstretched. I think you might be right with it being her teeth though. She has been a bit chewey the last week, but no drooling or bright cheeks. Might try a little baby nurofen to see if that helps.

Forgot to say Lizzie that Caitlin has had something similar - the Tomy dreamshow since birth and loves it still. She is never awake by the time the music runs out after 10 mins. Even now the crying stops before the music does but I hate hearing her cry as she really doesn't cry that much and never has done.

Yip, I'd agree molars. DS went from "night night mommy" and letting DH put him to bed to half an hour of blood-curdling shrieking -- this 2 months before the teeth actually popped.
