Why does 6mo wake up screaming an hour after going to bed?

For well over a week now, DS (6mo) has been waking up screaming about an hour after going to bed. He did have a cold, but is over that now and it's still going on. We've tried the various teething remedies, but if they seem to work one day, they don't the next.

After he has gone back to sleep, he will sleep fairly well the rest of the night - or as well as he ever has done, waking roughly every 3 hours still. But when he wakes the rest of the night, he's calm and simply feeds and goes back to sleep. He's breastfed and we've been weaning him for about 4 weeks.

Any ideas?

Sorry you are going through this. I think some DCs are prone to this at times.

My DD did this every so often, would go to sleep then wake up 60-90 minutes later crying and screaming. The only thing to settle her was to get her up for 15 minutes, then she would settle again fine.It would last a week or so, then she would be fine for weeks, then it might start again. She is 2 now, and this hasn't happened for at least 6 months

Good luck, I think time will cure this for you.

DD sometimes has what I think must be night terrors, particuarly when she is knackered, where she cries out with a blood curdling scream but doesn't properly wake up unless I pick her up to comfort her. So if its an unusual cry, it could be this.

On the other hand, DD also went through a phase of waking up 45 mins to an hour after going to bed at night. There seems to be a correlation between this and nights when her room is slightly warmer than normal. I tog her up ready for a drop in temperature overnight, butin the early evening I think it is too hot for her and this can cause the waking up. It may not be this, but thought I would share with you in case it rang a bell.
