I'm going to try dummy cold turkey today - need some support!

Hello, after weeks upon weeks of my dd waking up and asking for her dummy every couple of hours, and the last two nights of it being every hour or so I have about had enough! Even when she co-sleeps she still wakes up asking for her dummy. She doesn't appear to be teething, or to be hungry.

She's now developed a special trick of taking it out, waving it around, then trying to stick it back in but crying when it won't go in. I don't know how to get her to go go sleep without it though, does anyone have any tips? I've read a few people on here saying that they did 3 days cold turkey wth the dummy and then their baby did without it ... any tips / help gratefully received - btw she is almost 6 months old and bottle-fe.

Honestly, it gets better. In a couple of days time, you will be rejoicing! You will all sleep better. Good luck. Hope you have an ok night.

How did it go through the night Mummy2Isla? Hopefully a bit better... Let us know.

i started again today to get rid of the dummy/boobing to sleep.
Morning nap so far - took 20mins and I went in every 5 mins to reassure (this kind of winds her up a bit though)

I realised i never did a good wind-down routine with her - the feeding and sleeping have always been too close together.

Let's see how lunchtime goes though . . . .

Well the night was brilliant and actually better than with the dummy!! She went to sleep really quickly as she was sooo tired, woke at 10.30 and was fed then went back to sleep ... and slept til 7.06am!!!!!! She woke up a couple of times in the night but I just stroked her back and she went straight to sleep. She did spend the night in bed with us but I figured she needed some comfort!! Also I've been constantly giving her a little cuddly blanket and had her in the sling whenever at home.
Not much in the way of naps today but a BIT better than yesterday, less crying - have kept REALLY busy, went out to music and movement class then to meet dh for lunch, shopping and lots of pushing in the pram have kept her quite happy. I am now motivated to keep going! TINSELJuice I hope you are having an ok day .. the second day is better if that helps!!
Just hope tonight is ok now!

well, the lunchtime nap took about 25mins and now i have put her down for the night after feeding, reading, singing and cuddling and there is no sound so far . . . .

could it really be going so well . . .?

she did get very antsy about 4.30-ish when she sometimes takes a powernap and feel asleep bf-ing while we were on the sofa but i just whipped it out and continued to cuddle her and she slept another 15mins.

Took a long time to get her to sleep. Picked her up and cuddled her for ages and in the end let her have a little cry - was timing 5 minutes (with me lying on the bed next to her cot) and after 4 she stopped - bonus!! She woke up at about 9.30pm and my dh did the same. Hoping she sleeps well after her 11pm feed!! Ladies, those of you who are planning to go cold turkey around 6 months ... it's not quite as bad as you may think. Not fun but not undoable. Saying that I'll probably now have a dreadful night!!!

Sounds doable I'm really getting optimistic about my own son's dummy addiction by reading this. I'm so happy to hear it's went ok so far. So has was night number two? Hoping it went even better...

Maria2007 · 10/12/2008 08:52

Oops, I meant how was night number 2?

TINSELJuice · 10/12/2008 09:12

she didn't cry at all when i put her down at 7!

next waking was at 5am, she wasn't going off but not going back to sleep so i fed her then and put her back in her cot where she slept until 8am and woke up all smiles and giggles.
