I am dreading you saying 'drop his nap'! Prob is that he is keeping himself awake at night and then cannot possibly stay awake all day without a nap. I also have school run and after school clubs with dd so I know he will not last the course without a nap cos he always falls asleep in car if it is nap time iyseim. Help!!!!!!!!

My niece does this - talks to her animals in her bed, but she does it on her own and with little fuss - more a kind of getting the day sorted in her head - listening to it on the baby monitor is better than any tv programme!

I wouldnt worry about it as long as it is not stopping you from getting on with your evening!

cruisemum1 · 02/12/2008 22:24

andyrobo237 - thanks for that. Glad to know he is not alone - I am sure it is down to your niece's and his, super intellect - needing to sift through the day's events. He rarely needs my intervention. Though tonight he called me up as he had had a poo! He chunters on about nothing in particular - sometimes sings the theme tune for Balamory or calls for Mr Tumble. It is very cute but kind of bugs me as I cannot switch off until he has fallen asleep. Also two people said today that he prob doesn't need his daytime nap that is why he is deferring falling asleep at bedtime - prob is he is cutting his nightime sleep short nad so cannot do without a nap in the day........"just a phase, just a phase".......

I wouldn't worry if he is chatting and happy.DS did this,I only intervened if I heard wails.DD has just started doing this. She stands up in her cot and looks out the window. She has sn and no words but does lots of happy shreiks, eventually she drops off...tis a phase as you say.As long as they are happy leave well alone is my motto

Oh I feel all emotional reading this.

dd1 used to do exactly this and it was HILARIOUS to listen to. She's stopped now .

I hate to say it, but it did come down to too much daytime sleep. As soon as she dropped the daytime nap, the chatting at 10pm stopped.

My only piece of advice would be - put a tape recorder in her room and record a few sessions before this lovely phase passes. I wish I had done that.

ps - on the nap thing, dd still has a few daytime naps each week, largely because she inevitably ends up on a car / pushchair journey that can't be avoided. This is fine - as long as she has the majority of days with no nap, then she is still ready for sleep by about 8pm every evening.

pregnabrain - I dreasd the idea of ds dropping his daytime nap - I need it more than he does!!!!

My DD does this too. We often get a load of songs - we had Jingle Bells last night! She also spends a lot of time telling her teddy to get comfy and shouting at him to go to sleep.

Will definitely try to record her next time to embarass show her when she's older.

cruisemum - i know exactly what you mean. i still haven't got over the loss of that precious free time in the middle of the day. thankfully, cbeebies has come riding along on its white charger to save my sanity!

cruisemum1 · 05/12/2008 19:35

katie -lovely really isn't it .
pregnabrain - just dreading it as i have several 5pm /6pm/7pm collections/pickups from dd's after school clubs during the week and he will defo not last the course if put in the car at that time of the day. aaaargh

katiechops - how old is your dd?

If he's not upset at being left to chatter in the cot I wouldn't do anything. My nephew does this. I wish DS did.

cruisemum1 · 05/12/2008 20:14

georgimama - how old is your nephew? Does he sleep in teh day too? He seems happy enough but jsut tired when he gets up the next morning of course. Just a confusing phase I guess...........

He's 2.4 but he's been like this since he was about eight months old, just doesn't make a fuss about going to bed.

Ds is still not a good sleeper (although a lot better than he was) at 21 months but at around a year dropping from two naps to one meant he slept through the evening and only woke once. This was a vast improvement on 5-8 wake ups from bedtime to morning!!

georgimama · 05/12/2008 21:48

And no DN doesn't have scheduled daytime naps anymore, although he does occasionally fall asleep in the car or pram.

AuntyJ · 06/12/2008 07:33

dd used to sing at this age it was lovely! however she did drop her daytime nap @ 2 so the singing lasted for about 40mins

cruisemum1 · 06/12/2008 21:19

i kept him up all day today and he fell asleep at 7:15pm without a murmur - i felt really awful though as he was soooo shattered. Oh what to do???!! thanks all
