When did your baby stop having two daytime naps?

DS2 has recently turned one and seems to be dropping his 9am nap. He only sleeps for about 40 mins at his lunchtime nap but does go for at least 12 hours (usually) at night. The annoying thing is is that if he doesn't have the nap he's knackerd by 11am and then the whole day is messed up. DS1 had a morning nap until he was much older (I think) and had lunchtime naps of up to two hours until he was almost three. I know all children are diff but this seems a bit early for DS2. What did your lo do?

dd was about 11 months and ds was about 12/13 months. I did start with them having the one nap around 11am and I gave them lunch afterwards and it gradually got later and later until it was after lunch. I gave them a mid-morning snack to tide them over till their later lunch. DS (2.2 years) still has a nap and it starts around 12.30/12.45pm.

likessleep · 02/12/2008 12:44

ds is 13mths old. he now sleeps late morning, half 10/11ish, then a nap about half 3 (although sometimes he doesn't nap, but goes to bed at half 6). he sleeps 7-7 at night.
can you try giving him a nap late morning?

Holymoly321 · 02/12/2008 13:13

I worry that by giving him a later nap he then won't want to nap in the afternoon at all! He goes to bed bet 6 and 6.30pm every night and sleeps thru till at least 6, 6.30 am.

God I remember this when ds was shifting naps. I was traumatised! If he didn't get to sleep early enough in the morning then he wouldn't be tired enough to have his afternoon nap early enough for me to wake him before school run etc. It was dreadful - I got myself in a tiz and posted on here under several different topics! I eventually engineered the one nap thing when he was around 15 - 16 mths old. it took about 3-4 weeks to settle into a proper established routine but after that I found planning our days soooo much easier. I can offer advice if you wish! Good luck

I am just starting to change from 2 naps to 1 with DS who is 13 months. I manage to keep himup till about 11.45 and now he sleeps for 1.5 - 2.5hrs. It's a total pain on the mornings he goes to nursery though as he either gets more tired and needs a morning nap or they are just not listening to my request about delaying it. Ho hum!

drjane · 03/12/2008 21:07

We've pretty much moved to one nap now - ds is 14 months. It's taken a couple of months and even now if he gets up early (before 6.30am) he often needs a morning nap too.

The difficulty is keeping him up long enough to have his lunch. I daren't drive anywhere after about 10am because he falls asleep in the car, and if he falls asleep at this time this will be his only nap of the day and by bedtime he's beside himself with tiredness.

DD is 10 mths and already only seems to want one nap a day. I am

I seem to remember DS was well over a year when he dropped the morning one.

Bubbaloo · 03/12/2008 22:09

Both of mine love their sleep but have only ever had one nap a day.
Ds1 stopped his afternoon nap(3 hours)in Sept when he was 3.3 and ds2(20 months) still has his 3 hour nap every afternoon, although he is fine if he goes without it every now and then.

MrsBadger · 03/12/2008 22:40

dd is 15m and is best with a mid-mornign (10.30) and a mid-afternoon (3ish) nap but can sometimes get away with a single one after lunch

the trouble arises ifvshe has (eg) 40min at 10am and then won;t nap in the afternoon - she falls asleep in the car on the way home and bedtime is buggered...

MrsBadger · 03/12/2008 22:41

3hr naps?!

Bubbaloo · 03/12/2008 22:50

He goes up at 12ish and I wake him up at 3pm.He'd have another hour if I let him. They both love their sleep and are back in bed at 6pm.

TheGabster · 04/12/2008 12:54

So glad you posted this. DS is just dropping his now - 10mo next week - and was thinking I must be so unlucky, but he has never been a good day napper.

So far we have had refusal to nap every third day or so. Have found on the days he naps, around 9.30 ish for half an hour, I put him down later for lunch nap (nearer 12.45/1pm) and he will take nearly 1.5 hrs which gets him to bed time (usually). If he refuses the nap, I work around a 12pm nap time, but don't put him down until I am sure he is ready, and he then seems to take nearly 2 hours, so it seems to even out.

Of course this is the routine for this week, who knows what will happen next week

pamelat · 04/12/2008 13:18

DD is 10.5 months and I am having the same problems.

She dropped her afternoon nap a long time ago but used to have half an hour at 9am and an hour and a half to 2 hours at lunch time.

She sleeps 630pm - 630am (usually - not this week as she is poorly and thinks 4am is fun!)

She has refused her 9am nap but is then knackered by 11am, too tired to eat. She is really out of sorts but I can't "make" her sleep in the morning and it will coincide with arrival at nursery in a month or so?

pamelat · 04/12/2008 13:19

I am scared that if I let her sleep at 11 then she will think thats her lunch nap and not sleep again later, she would be very grumpy by 630pm then!

TheGabster · 04/12/2008 14:50

yup, that's what we get pamelat. No way I can get DS to take a pm nap, even if he only sleeps 1hr lunch. BUT he does zone out in pushchair and seems refreshed after a jolly in the woods even if he doesn't sleep so have had to make do with that and early bed time on those days. Not sure if this would work for you?

pamelat · 04/12/2008 18:25

Have just had to put DD to bed at 6pm today, ouch, will see what morning brings!

TheGabster · 06/12/2008 13:32

how did you get on pamelat?

DS has decided he wants both naps after all, and will wake up early to get a headstart on the day instead ......

Gemzooks · 08/12/2008 11:10

my DS stopped the morning nap around 14 months, I gave him lunch a bit early and made his lunchtime nap a bit earlier say 12-2 or 2.30. gradually they get older and can push the nap back to 12.30..

Biglipsdrankallthexmasbaileys · 08/12/2008 11:12

dd1 stopped her morning naps @ 8m and her afternoon naps @ 2.6yrs old. she is now 4.2 yrs old and have naps when needed.
