what time does the average 7 year old go to bed?

Okay, so maybe there isn't really an average 7 year old as all our children are unique and special but please humour me for the sake of this query.

7 year old DS (year 3) has been playing up recently at bedtime, coming out of his room lots with an amazing array of excuses etc. DH is getting cross with him but I am wondering if we have forgotten that he's growing up and maybe we need to move his bedtime.

SO, i'm just after finding out the average bedtime for his age group please.

TIA

Mine goes upstairs about 7.30, and lights out about 8. At the week-ends he goes about 8.30. My 9 year old has the same bedtime.

My 6.5yo (Y2) goes to bed between 7:30-8pm on a school night; later at weekends and holidays sometimes.

dd1 is 7 on wed and she goes to bed anytime between 7 and 8.On saturdays she is allowed a stay up until 9ish.

7.30pm

My DS (7) Usually goes to bed at the same time as his sister(4) but then I realised she was falling asleep a lot earler than him.
He was very good staying in bed, but when I used to go up and check on them he would still be awake. So now when his sister goes to bed at around 7.30pm after her story, I sit in bed with DS and read to him for about 30 mins or so and this just gives him a bit more time to get sleepy before nodding off.

So yes I think maybe he needs to either go to bed a little later if he isnt sleepy or maybe he could read in bed for say 30 mins before lights off.

Hope this helps.

ds1 is 7 soon and needs 11 hours sleep - doesn't matter when he goes (730ish in week and bit later at weekend) that's how much he has. Ds1 comes out of his room if he's unsettled about something and can't get to sleep - then we have 4 wees and a drink of water

thank you all for the replies! DH and I are thinking along your lines Tidgypuds. We'll get the two of them ready for bed together (I say 'we' but in reality DH isn't usually home that early so it will be 'I'), DS can chill out while I read to DD and then once she is tucked in then I can read with DS and if necessary leave him reading in his room for a tad longer and go and turn the light off after 15/30 mins or so.
Thanks again all.

My dd needed 11 hours at that age and still does now at 9. i think it will be obvious if your ds is low on sleep because his behaviour will be poor.

With my dd she is pre-programmed to wake up at approx 6.30am regardless of when she goes to bed so if she is going to get enough sleep she has to go to bed at 7.30pm every night. Nonsensical but true! I don't understand it...why would you get up at 6.30am if you had a late night and still felt tired??!!!

bozza · 24/11/2008 21:25

That's how we do it mckensie. 4yo DD really needs to be in bed no later than 7.30 and we do baths, pjs, teeth together. But then DS gets a time he can read to (tonight was 10 to 8) depending on how tired he is and whether he needs to get up in the morning.

mckenzie · 24/11/2008 21:43

My DS is like your DD Podrick - he wakes at 7am pretty much every morning regardless of how late he goes to bed.
I do try and judge his tiredness by his behaviour but think perhaps my desire to get him into bed for some adult time is clouding my judgement . We'll try the new tactic tomorrow and see how it pans out. Thanks again for the replies.
