When did you move DC into their own room?

DS is nearly 8 months and sleeps in a cot in our room . Wasn't planning on moving him to his own room for another month or so but our room isn't double glazed and so much colder than the rest of the house so wondering if I should move him to his room which is much more toasty. However, it feels like such a big step. Just gone back to work and want him close to me at night, plus he still wakes several times during the night so easier to be in the same room. Also, isn't the risk of SIDS still present, albeit much reduced?

Don't know about the sids, btu if ti is easier for you then keep him in your room. If he is cold he will let you know and you can stick another blanket on him.
Our house is FREEZING and ds sleeps through it when we don't!

thatsnotmymonster · 22/11/2008 22:12

From birth for all 3 of them!

CharCharGabor · 22/11/2008 22:13

DD is 15 months and is still in our room. She sleeps terribly and I don't want to be walking back and forth all night. Do whatever works for you. You can always wrap him up warm.

feedthegoat · 22/11/2008 22:14

About 4 months when outgrew basket as didn't comfortably have room for cot. Think it will feel like a big step whenever you do it.

hester · 22/11/2008 22:14

SIDS advice is to keep them in your room for first six months, isn't it?

I moved dd out at 8 months. But if you don't feel ready, don't move him. Are you putting him in an extra warm sleeping bag?

littlelamb · 22/11/2008 22:15

Ds is 5.5 months and we have been co sleeping but we are both ill and tbh he wriggles a LOT and the sleep deprivation is getting to me more than usual. My room is not big enough for his cot so for the last two nights he has been in his own room and so far so good. He starts off the night in his cot but should he wake up and not settle I will bring him back in with me. I also worry about the cold but he seems to keep warm enough in his grobag with a cellular blanket over the top. With dd we lived in a teeny one bedroom flat til she was 10 months and it felt such a big step when we moved here to move her to her own room. Both do seem to sleep more soundly when they are in their own room

sweetkitty · 22/11/2008 22:16

DD1 15 months
DD2 13 months
DD3 4 months don't see her moving out before 12 months either

Personally I like them in with me for the first year

used2bthin · 22/11/2008 22:17

My dd was 18m I think. She has medical needs so I wanted her in with me longer than others might do. I began to feel pressured and so stopped discussing it in the end as people I hardly knew would sometimes make comments about moving rooms! I think it is such an individual thing and n my case I eventually moved as DD had started waking and wanting to get in with me straight way which was difficult to avoid being in the same room. When I did move, she seemed to take far less notice than me!

vicky762 · 22/11/2008 22:17

i wouldn't move him just now if you have just gone back to work - one step at a time ! Just get him snuggled in a gro-bag of the right tog strength / an extra blanket and he'll be fine !

bythepowerofgreyskull · 22/11/2008 22:18

6 weeks for DS1
3 weeks for DS2

snigger · 22/11/2008 22:18

DD1 age 20 mths - just prior to birth of DD2

DD2 age 7 mths - into shared room with DD1, because DD1 told us it was time

cali · 22/11/2008 22:20

DD1 7 months
DD2 4 months, she made too much noise and we just disturbed each other. Have to admit to her coming through to our bed from about 4am each morning until about a month ago.
Was funny how she seemed to get a lot quieter at night, even sleeping in my bed, once we tried moving her into her own bedroom.

We just moved our 16-week old (almost 4 months) today !!! Lets see how it goes... We were co-sleeping for a couple of months. Then we put his cot next to our bed for a while, but that didn't work because our boy woke up every time we entered or left the room- or simply stirred- and only re-settled in our bed. So we ended up, invariably, with him between us in bed. This arrangement worked well at the beginning but not anymore, & we thought 4 months is a good time to move him, since we think later it'll be harder. Today has gone relatively ok so far (it's 10.20 pm & he's slept with only a few awakenings since 7, so not TOO bad). We're fully prepared to bring him back in our bed with us later tonight if he wakes & is completely unsettled, but so far so good.

As for the SIDS risk & the advice about 6 months, to be honest I'm not sure how big the risk really is at 4 months & to what extent co-sleeping reduces it... and I'm sure SIDS is extremely rare at 8 months.

If on the other hand it's working well for you having DS in your room, then I would agree with the others, just add an extra blanket on top of a warm sleeping bag, and he should be fine.

Gangle · 22/11/2008 22:23

thanks all. He's in a 2.5 tog gro bag in his warmest babygro plus have turned the heating up to max - he feels warm and will no doubt end up in our bed anyway! Why do we have to move them out? I love having him there.

Keep him there, then. Some time before puberty he'll tell you he's ready to move

jenaegi · 22/11/2008 22:31

All of my kids were in our room until they were about 14 months, but like above, whatever works for you is best!

ches · 22/11/2008 22:32

I moved DS out around 4 months, then ended up falling asleep on the spare bed EVERY night at first night feed, waking up for second night feed, and falling asleep during that too. Had a sore neck after it all so we moved into DS's room.

Maria2007 · 22/11/2008 22:44

If you feel it's working well for you having him in your room, then by all means keep him there! It's a good arrangement & I think it works for loads of people: as long as you're getting some sleep...
