Soory if this has been asked/answered a million times, but I can't find it if it has (and have tried, honest!!) At what age is it safe/recommended to use a sleeping bag? They sell them from 0, but I have an idea its not immediate - can anyone enlighten me? (I am 29 weeks with first DC so am starting to obsess about details!)

they can be used once the baby is over 7.5 to 8lb weight- so potentially from birth. It all depends if you feel you're going to try swaddling in a moses basket or crib first.

MissisBoot · 22/11/2008 19:07

I think its from 10lbs but friends used their's from birth. The head needs to be able to not slip through the neckhole, but would imagine it could be used on a largish newborn from birth.

i think it depends on size of baby - we used ours form a month when we moved him into a cot. in moses basket he was always in thse cellular blankets....

Blimey that was quick!! I am going to use a nest/hammock (the amby things?) and do have a few grobags that people have given me. I am quite large in the bump department so it might well be a big 'um when it comes out, so I will maybe look at the neck business. Swaddling sounds possibly useful and sensible too - so I will have to see?!

I think it says on them to use from 10llbs. Before that I used a swaddle blanket or just those cellular blankets.

SpecialOffer · 22/11/2008 19:20

I started with swaddling then at about a month old he went into Grobags. I have never looked back, he is 16 months and is still in them. he is so wriggly when sleeping he kicks blankets off....

kalo12 · 22/11/2008 19:21

swaddling was best. didn't use a grobag til 7 months when he kept sticking his legs through the bars and rolling about

PrettyCandles · 22/11/2008 19:26

You can use it as soon as you like. If the baby is too small for the grobag then there is a risk that they could slide down inside - the same risk as them sliding beneath the blankets if you don't put them in the feet-to-foot position. Many 1st size grobags have ways of shortening the bag for this reason.

Swaddling is excellent for very young babies. I would start using the grobag as soon as they seem to outgrow swaddling, or immediately if they don't seem to need swaddling.

That said, ds2 was getting too big to swaddle in a muslin, but still seemed to need the swaddle, so I put him in a grobag and just swaddled his arms.

Grobags rock! They are the solution to - or prevention of - so many sleep problems.

bracingair · 22/11/2008 19:53

grobags are great to use. Dont need to worry about them kicking off their covers and then waking you because they are cold.

When you pick them up to feed they are still 'wrapped in their blankets' - so cosy! Much less fussing then re-swaddling etc. Highly recommend them.

Congrats on your forthcoming baby!

Seona1973 · 22/11/2008 20:02

the proper grobags are ok from 7lbs and have poppers under the arms to make the arm holes smaller. Some makes are only suitable from 10lbs so you would need to wait a few weeks before using them. With dd I didnt start using them till 9 months and she was out of them by 18 months when she grew out of the 6-18 months size. DS has been in his from a couple of weeks old and is still in his at 2.1years as he sleeps so well with it on (he has an 18-36months one).

TooMuchMakkaPakka · 01/12/2008 13:23

Yes, 7lb for the original grobags and 10lbs for some others. if there is nothing on the washing label i'd wait until your baby is 7 1/2lb and then see if they are likely to snuggle down inside. Do up any extra fastenings that help avoid this happening, e.g. poppers on the arms.
We swaddled until our baby reached 7lb (she was only 5lb7oz at birth and then lost weight).

Used grow bag from birth for both children, now 3 and 6! Fab, can't recommend them enough. Great if you're breast feeding and up a few times in the night. Only stopped using them once we outgrew all the sizes.

SazzlesIsASleighBell · 05/12/2008 23:01

Yikesmum, they go up to age 10 now i think
