Just 3 and on sleep strike

Our just 3 DS woke up at 3 on Wednesday morning, screaming blue murder. He was awake, but insisted that one of us stay with him. Up to this, he has been great at night since he was about 9mths.

Other salient facts: He has a night light. The younger sibling is 10mths and does wake for feed(s) at night. DS is not ill and gave up daytime naps at 2.5yrs.

In the end I had to go and feed number 2, and DS fell asleep waiting for me to come back.

Thursday night he went 12hrs, no interuptions. He told us in the day that there were "winking eyes" in his bedroom. DP gave him a torch at bedtime and went round the room with him to show him that there were no eyes.

Last night he was up between 1-2am, crying/tantruming unless one of us went in to him. It was a bit good cop/bad cop - I reassured him that we were in the next room etc., and DP was a bit less patient, but possibly more successful. He told DS that he would come back in 10mns, then 30mns etc. After the second return visit DS was asleep.

DP has bought DS some flourescent stars to stick on the ceiling, perhaps this might take his mind off things tonight.

I just wanted to ask if anyone else had had this with a slightly older child (have heard of it with smaller toddlers/babies), and if so, what should we be doing. BTW we keep the lights dimmed or off and are trying not to give him too much attention during these episodes, but it's hard not to when he is screaming and the baby (who has only just dropped a few night feeds and is teething) is in the room next door.

We are knackered and I am finding it hard to be positive with DS in the daytime. I just want my bed!! HELP appreciated
