when do newborns stop needing a poo in the night? Is it when there tummies get bigger and they stop needing a feed in the night?

Ds stopped doing poos in the night long before he slept through (which wasn't til 9mo!). Can't remember exactly when, maybe around 3/4mo?

MegBusset · 21/11/2008 19:16

Should clarify, he had night feeds til 9mo.

Tbh I hardly ever change ds in the night unless it is a particuarly explosive poo. Too much disruption all round. We use Tesco nappies and so far no nappy rash and hardly any leaks

My ds3 is now 4 months old. He stopped needing a nappy change at night when he was about 2 months old. We co-sleep and he feeds all night so it is not to do with that. Now, he has a big clear out when he gets up on the morning - usually 3 or 4 nappies in a row!

mine stopped pooing in the night at about 8 weeks. he then reverted to waking up for a big poop at about 5am but on the plus side that was it for the day

Anglepoise · 21/11/2008 20:42

DD stopped pooing in the night at around 4 weeks - she managed to co-ordinate it almost perfectly with my MN thread asking if it was okay to change her less frequently in the night

I still change wet nappies at night (sometimes none, usually one, occasionally two) at 21 months. Maybe this is why my DS has toilet trained in the day at 18 months as he's not accustomed to lying in his own filth?

To answer the OP, around 6 months the night poos mostly stopped; I think the last one was at 9 months after his first bit of pizza crust.

Maria2007 · 22/11/2008 09:08

We stopped changing DS around 8-9 weeks if I remember correctly (or around that time, not sure exactly when). The main thing was that at that point he stopped pooing at night, so we were happy to leave a nappy filled with pee on for 12 hours, but not one with poo. Until 8-9 weeks he used to poo at least once between 7-7, and we'd change him. Now he's stopped that, and poos during the day (thankfully). But lo & behold, yesterday he had a gigantic poo at 3.30, what fun!!!! (not).

belgo · 22/11/2008 09:17

My ds is nearly six weeks and poos two or three times a night.

Biglips · 22/11/2008 09:20

my dd is 8 weeks and i dont remember ever changing a poo nappy only wet ones thru the night.

BellaBear · 22/11/2008 09:21

I stopped changing DS at night when he stopped pooing at night, about 8-9 weeks, but we occasionally changed after this, when necessary.

Geepers · 22/11/2008 09:59

I am surprised there are so many parents who don't think it's necessary to change dirty nappies at night. It's disgusting to leave a baby in poo for hours whether it's day or night time. Surely by morning it has completely caked and dried on?

downbutnotout · 22/11/2008 10:06

Sorry to disappoint other posters but I don't think I ever changed a nappy at night with dd, simply because I was so exhausted. Neither she nor her bottom seem to have suffered, although I don't remember her ever pooing much at night - but exhaustion may have wiped my memory. Equally, I never observed any dried or caked-on poo: nappies tend to remain moist inside.

downbutnotout · 22/11/2008 10:13

Btw, dd is now 4, at school and completely dry day and night and shows no evidence whatever of toileting "issues".

belgo · 22/11/2008 10:46

If you use disposable nappies they are so absorbant I don't think it's a problem to leave a wet one on.

I don't like to leave a pooey nappy on though, I just wish ds pooed less at night! It is very tiring changing his nappy in the middle of the night, far more tiring then feeding him.

babyphat · 22/11/2008 11:08

around 6 weeks mine stopped pooing at night, previously each feed=poo, at round the same time she started storing them up and just doing an enormous one twice a week or so.

apparently a bf baby can go up to a fortnight although her record is 5 days.

makes the cloth nappies much more do-able if you're mainly dealing with wet ones.
