16mo started waking up yelling like he's in pain in early hours

My 16mo DS has started waking up between 3 and 5 a.m. just yelling his little head off. It's very unnerving as I immediately panic. He sounds likes he's in pain but he's not as far as we know. His teeth are all through, he's been a bit poorly but it's only a cold and he's been checked twice for ear infections in recent weeks as I thought it was that initially. We go into him to give him his dummy but it doesn't help calm him. We pick him up and cuddle him to calm him down but he either then wakes up even more and wants to start playing or will snooze but then start again making the same awful, pained cry when we put him back in the cot, even if five seconds earlier he seemed like he was dropping off and nice and relaxed again.

He's always been a reasonable sleeper, he's in the same cot, grobag and room he's always in, black out blinds etc. He's used to going into his cot awake at 7 p.m. and settling himself and is very good at it. When he wakes up properly at 7 a.m. he happily gurgles away to himself and chucks teddies about until we go and get him.

It's happened three times this week so it seems to be getting worse and it's really upsetting me. I just don't know what to do and I don't understand what's causing it - can kids of this age be scared of the dark? Can they get bad dreams? And if so with such frequent occurence?

Anyone got any experience of this?

Yes my first thought was a recurring scary dream.

No other ideas, but poor baby, and poor you

I am pretty sure they can have bad dreams at that age and may even be able to suffer from night terrors which would account for the crying.

I found this about night terrors.

They can start earlier from something else I read (8 to 12 mths)

Thanks both.

That's so horrible - I just hate the idea that there's something that scares him so much

Are night terrors alleviated by having a night light in the room do you think? I thought if he was scared and woke up in the pitch black that might make things worse, whereas if he can see he's at home in just his room as usual he might find it easier to resettle? Then I worried that the light might make him more prone to waking?! Sleep deprivation on top or a virus is making me uncertain about everthing at the moment....

He is very much awake and looking for cuddles when we go in. Will have a look at those other threads now so thanks for those too.

No, happy at nursery, nothing new, eating well. All very frustrating. I think, having read the crazy night wakers thread (and will now be watching with interest), that it is without rhyme or reason. I am girl who needs her sleep though, I actually get physically ill if it gets too bad and this is killing me. However, DH is fab so between us we will just have to struggle through. Thinking about it, it never seems to happen after nursery, when he probably has a far more physical day and lots of fresh air. I will keep a note of when and how it happens over coming weeks and see if there's a pattern - might help alleviate it if not fix it.
