Is this just a phase? Waking 4mo

My 4mo dd started sleeping through at 10 weeks (sorry everyone, don't hate me!!) but she's started to wake again in the night (last night 2am, 4am). Not sure what to do - should I feed her(quickest way to get her back to sleep) or not, since I know she can go 10 hours at night on a good day? Or is this a growth spurt so she's genuinely hungry?

By the way, I still bf her to sleep (at night and for daytime naps) - could this be causing the problem? 4 months feels like to little to start sleep training, but maybe that's what we need to do.

Any tips very welcome! Thanks x

Is she using a dummy? Could it be the cold? My DD did start to wake more ofter around that time too

4mo is a classic time for this due to growth spurts.

Your dd is waking because she is hungry so you should feed her. Teaching her how to fall asleep by herself is important but your instinct that tells you it is too early is prob right.

hi Becky
She doesn't use a dummy - I wish she would but she'll never take one. I'm really conscious of the room temp too, because i suspect that might be a factor. But last night and the one before it's been quite warm here... tell me yours sleeps through now!?

My DS is 14 weeks and we have daytime nap issues. He wakes up after 45 mins and doesn't resettle. We have started sleep training cos it is getting to the point where we cannot go anywhere cos he won't settle in his pram either. He wakes up really grumpy and basically spends most of his day grumpy. He has a dummy so think this doesn't help.
Wasabi is probs right maybe shes hungry, my health visitor said they start to get more hungry at 4 months in prep for weaning, although you should go as long as you can with exclusive BF (health guidelines 6 months although its easier said than done!). If she keeps on demanding to be fed all the time she may be ready but I would talk it over with your health visitor first though.

very common at 4months. It is hunger from a growth spurt. Sometimes this is misinterpreted as time to wean, but it isn't. NOTHING (well 1 thing) has more calories than milk!

If you search the archives for titles with 16 weeks or 4 months in them, you'll see hundreds asking the same as you.

Good luck!

These 4mo growth spurts can sometimes be interpreted as a requirement for solids - they shouldn't be. As Starlight says the most calorific thing they can have is milk - a bit of carrot puree ain't going to do a lot other than possibly damage their digestive system which is why guidelines state 6 months.

Victorian Squalor is most knowledgable about this.

@ Screamingtheplace down - The good news is my DD sleeps for 10 hours straight these days... The bad news is she goes to bed at 6pm so I still feed her at 4am and then its back to sleep until 6/7

screamingtheplacedown · 05/11/2008 18:08

thanks. Was starting to think maybe we should try some solids (a couple of friends have at same age) - but am reluctant about it because of health advice and also am happy to bf and don't want to wish this(mostly!!) lovely age away too soon despite the bags under my eyes...
