15 month old still has to be cuddled to sleep in the day.

Hi,

I have a 15 month old dd2 who is very high maintenance but at night finally sleeps through in her own room.

In the day I have to sit her on my knee facing out of the window for her to go to sleep.

She watches the trees blowing and people passing. Occassionally she resists and cries to get off and play but not often if she is genuinely tired, she just goes off to sleep.

I tried to put her in her cot for naps but no joy just lots of crying. Tried staying with her, patting her, feeding her, just gets more and more angry and upset.

Night time settles herself in cot at 7 and sleeps through til 5:30.

I dont have a problem with her being on me to nap at all although it does mean I have to sit and watch crappy daytime tv but at least its peace and uiet and she is happy and well rested.

Other people seem to think its a problem and it does mean that when people come round I have difficulty as she does resist sleep and wants to play if they are talking.

I am glad of the cuddles really and it just pleases me that she does finally sleep at night that I dont want to screw it up by doing any crying it out or cc in her cot.

Is it such a problem that she wont settle herself in the day? or do I just leave things the way they are?

My health visitor asked where and how she napped and was horrified that I hadnt got her to self soothe in the day.

I dont get why she can at night but also dont reall mind her not doing in the day. She wont need naps forever so what really is the harm???

Hi there thisisthelast. Haven't spoken to you for a bit. How's things?

I'd carry on doing whatever works for you. If she's happy, your happy then who cares what people think?

Bumping this for you though!

thisisthelast - if it's not affecting her nightime sleep, and it means you get a sit-down too, I would say enjoy the cuddles!

DS was not a good sleeper, then went thro a phase of going awake into his cot for his nap, then just as suddenly stopped again. He is 2.3 yrs now and doesn't have a nap everyday, but when he does I take him into our bed and read stories and cuddle until he falls asleep. Sometimes I fall asleep too (as I am 7 months pg) but other times I can sneak off and do other stuff for an hour or 2 until he wakes up.

I wouldn't say it was a problem at all.
She can settle herself at night, so I don't think there is anything to worry about.
Enjoy the cuddles. The enforced rest will do you goood anyway and her warm little body will save on the heating!

Btw, my ds was great at self-sooting in the night, but daytime was frequently only able to nap if I walked for AGES in all weathers - could be worse!

Other people can be so annoying. If it is not a problem for you, then just enjoy her and the cuddles. It is for such a short space of time and noone but noone looks back at the end of their life and says "I wish I had cuddled my children less". I cuddled ds1 to sleep during the day and now his naps have been dropped I really miss it. I am not saying that people who don't do this are wrong just that everyone should do what is right for them and mind their own business.

nickytwooootimes · 01/11/2008 20:31

Oh yes, I longed to do it. Ds hated baing cuddled to sleep after the age of 3 mths.
I am of your cuddles!

thisisthelast · 01/11/2008 21:01

Thanks everyone this makes me feel a lot better.

I find that the only people who have a probem with it are people without children actually or my HV, who also doesnt have her own child.

It just worried me cos she really looked shocked as if I was bonkers for having my little girl sleeping on me.

I told her it wasnt a problem for me but she said how it would be affecting her ability to self soothe at night.

I never forced her to self soothe at night either, she just did it around 12 months and her night time sleep has got better and better.

DD1 would never be cuddled to sleep and I longed for it too. I must admit I thought dd2 would have outgrown it by now but I really do like the quiet time and cuddles.

Im suprised no one has come and told me to get her sleeping in her cot so I am very thankfull to you all for not judging.

Well DD is 15 months too and she doesn't self-settle at all. I bf then cuddle her to sleep for all naps and bedtimes. I'm sure they'll all figure it out in their own time. In the meantime, I'm enjoying the cuddles and the hot water bottle effect in this weather

thisisthelast · 01/11/2008 21:08

Ahhh yes the hot water bottle effect. I love it! I am so glad Im not the only one. My HV seemed to think I was a teeny bit crazy and went on about setting boundaries with her.

I just dont feel the need to with this issue. It works and she gets awful if she doesnt nap so why rock the boat?
