Freezing cold hands..

I'm really worried as my DD wakes up in the morning with freezing cold hands. I have her in a Vest, a baby gro and sleeping bag, but I'm worried she's still too cold.

Does anybody else's LO's have this or is it just mine?

how old is she?

babies have an immature circulation system IIRC, so their hands and feet do tend to be cooler

a good way of checking to see if she is warm or cold is to touch her chest

Becky77 · 22/10/2008 14:00

Hmmm I'm think my baby doesn't have enough on either... It's not just the cold hands she also has cold legs when I change her nappy in the night... I'm thinking I may add an extra thin cotton babygrow tonight

My ds was like this as a baby and i got him some babygros from next that have bits on thee sleeves that fold over their hands brilliant!! I,m sure they still do them as it was only about a year ago. Just dont do what i tried before i got these which was to put scratch mittens on him, i woke in the night to him making a funny noise and when i went in his room he,d managed to suck one off and the whole thing was in his mouth and he was having trouble breathing SCARY

How awful! Glad he was OK in the end! I cant use mits or those hand cover things as our DD sucks her fingers for comfort.

My DS has freezing cold hands. He sleeps in a vest, sleepsuit/babygro and sleeping bag. Quite a few friends with babies say they have cold hands too so I think it's quite common.

Although, I really do need to buy a winter tog sleeping bag for him [bluxh]

I worry about this too! We've got him a sleeping bag with arms and although his room temperature is just right he still has freezing hands in the morning...

she's 6 months

dd also 6 months, she sleeps in a long-sleeve vest and babygro and bag - so has double sleeves iyswim. if it's really cold i put her in a cardigan too - so there is a triple layer on her arms without the rest of her being too hot. i've found her hands aren't like iceblocks when her arms are warmer like this.

If it is really cold we put socks on under DS babygrow which seems to keep all of him a bit warmer. We also use a summer weight sleeping bag and then put a sheet and blanket over the top so we can add/remove as temp changes during the night (although I know the manufacturer doesn't recommend this). The best thing we have found is to use an oil heater on the lowest setting which we then switch off when we go to bed (unless it is freezing). He is sleeping so much more soundly since we did this and his hands are cold but not like blocks of ice.

hi

babies often have cold hands - it doesn't necessarily mean they are cold, its because of their immature circulation. the best way to judge their temp is to feel the back of their necks or their tummy.

its really important not to overheat a baby as thats a major risk factor in cot death. they do need lighter bedding than us.

what temperature is the room?

pudding25 · 27/10/2008 22:40

We set the heating to go on if the teperature drops under 18 degrees. DD is in a 2.5 tog sleeping bag with a long sleeve vest and sleepsuit.

BabyTalk13 · 08/11/2008 00:09

Hi I agree with luvaduck.
There hands sometimes go cold if the rest of them are too hot, its their way of cooling down, please dont layer them up to much as overheating is risk of cot death. Check the back of the next to see if hot or cold

thumbwitch · 08/11/2008 00:14

yup, my DS was the same until he was about 6/7mo. And the rest of him gets very hot very quickly. His feet used to be freezing too though - I mean dead white sometimes when I would change him in the morning, but they quickly warmed up again.
