Is an 18-month-old still supposed to have an afternoon nap?

And if yes, can someone please tell dd2 as she has decided she doesn't like doing this any more.

What age do they drop day time naps again? I'm sure dd1 (who is now nearly 12, hence my inability to remember) was having naps til she was three or four.

DD2 falls asleep fine in pram or in car seat, but not cot now.

She's up there now.... singing.

My DS1 had a nap till he was nearly 3, DS2 decided at exactly 2 years old that he wouldn't sleep anymore during the day. I think it can be quite variable at that age. I would still put her down at the usual time, if she is happy just resting in her cot and singing then at least you get a rest too!

I think the average is about 2 and a half. DS dropped his three weeks before DD was born (arrgghhh). He would still go and have a 'quiet time' in his cot with a story CD on, but would still be awake an hour later! He was 2 and a bit.

I think it can be related to how long they sleep at night - ie if you want her to have a daytime nap perhaps put her to bed later/get her up earlier?

Ds is 2.4 and still has a nap most days but if he doesn't he goes to bed earlier. Also, by comparison with his friend who gave up his nap well before 2, ds definitely does not sleep as long at night as his friend does.

Hope that makes sense!

Thanks for answers. Well she didn't sleep at all... had to go out at 1.30 ish and she slept straight away in the car. Monkey.

I don't mind her not having a nap as long as she doesn't get grumpy. it's just she still does a bit.

Kids eh?

If she's happy singing to herself I'd count your lucky stars and leave her be. DS only dropped from 2 naps to 1 at 18 months, but both his parents like their sleep.

hi
my dd is 18 months and its touch and go whether she naps or not. she WILL NOT nap in her cot anymore and I have to drive her or walk her in the pushchair. It's the only way and then thats not always reliable.

I think she will be dropping it certainly in the next 6 months.

dd1 had stopped by 2

other friends i have whose children are FOUR still nap! it's really each to their own.

shame though eh?!

egypt · 21/10/2008 06:06

but if she's happy to sing in her cot for a bit, carry on doing it. you get a break, as others have said and she goes to bed earlier too. win both ways!

PortAndDemon · 21/10/2008 07:46

There isn't a "supposed"... DS is 3.8 and will still nap many days but some of his friends did stop around 18 months IIRC. Putting on a story CD is often a good idea IME.

my dd has an hour every afternoon and she just turned 18 mths, and dont see it stopping any time soon, she might have a longer one if it has beeen a really active morning oor playgroup.
