What time does your early waking toddler have a nap?

Because I've just put DS in bed and the street-lighting is still on!

He's 15 months and never really gets enough sleep (still naps twice a day and needs an hour each time, bare minimum). He tends to wake between 5.30 and 6.30am and although obviously tired there's no getting him back to sleep. So we get up and get breakfast out of the way then he plays for a bit by which time he's shattered again. He'll wake up around half 9 and be full of cheer until lunchtime when he needs another sleep.

It just seems crazy that he's back in bed before daylight - is he totally weird at his age or is this OK?

Ds used to do this and I wish he still did.

He still wakes early 5.30 this morning, but doesn't nap and goes to be at 7.30. Rarely he may drop off for 45 mins at 4ish if we are out in the buggy.
He is 2.5 btw

DS has woken 30-45 min earlier these past few mornings. I put it down to him being ahead of the game on the clocks changing and am thankful in advance that I don't have to wake him an hour before he's ready come November.

My DS, 1yo, is exactly the same. I put it down to him being hungry coz as soon as he's eaten he looks tired again. I've tried bigger dinners but he just won't eat them! Am hoping that one day it will magically end. Everything is a phase, after all!

My 14 month old is waking at 5.30am these days. I'm assuming it's teething. It's been going on for about 3 weeks, except she point blank refuses to nap during the day as well, most days. I'm lucky if she naps an hour in total between 5am and 7pm. She gets herself so overtired that she's cranky and whingy and clingy and it's driving me crazy.

I've also tried more food during the day, and it seems to make no difference if she's had calpol at bedtime or not.

Justaboutstealswinegums I'm reassured that your DS stopped after a month. That gives me hope!

I've heard that sleep patterns can be disrupted when they are starting to walk - do you find this? Apparently at major developmental milestones they are so busy processing the new skills that it upsets their sleep. Does this sound reasonable?

This too will pass....

ShowOfHands · 17/10/2008 09:56

naturelover is spot on about major developmental milestones and sleep.

My 17 month olds hasn't napped for about 3 months. She's a cheerful soul though and sleeps 12 hours at night. Just wanted to reassure you that I know of many children around this age that are back in bed by 9am and napping later in the day too.

naturelover · 17/10/2008 10:03

I do feel sorry for my little girl. Getting canines at the moment and on the brink of walking. It's a LOT for such a little girl.

But God I'm tired!
I was going to start a thread this morning but someone had started this one. It's always nice just to know other people are experiencing the same thing.

What pains me is that DD is so clearly exhausted during the day but fights sleep so hard and by bedtime is a screaming mess. She was always such a good sleeper - at night and naps - and I'm very lucky and don't take it for granted!

ShowOfHands · 17/10/2008 10:07

Oh naturelover dd was the same at 12 months when she started walking. Sleep was hellish and she was exhausted. As soon as she cracks it, she'll settle down again. In the meantime just do whatever you can to get her to sleep when she's exhausted. Walking in the pushchair, driving, rocking etc. It passes soon enough

Canines? Cor, my dd still has no canines. In fact at 12 month she still had no teeth.

naturelover · 17/10/2008 10:51

ShowOfHands that's very reassuring.

She's got lots of teeth for her age, poor thing. Still, at least it will be over and done with. I think the teething is holding back her walking a bit - I've heard teething can hurt babies' ears and affect their balance. Certainly in the last week she's not shown any inclination to even push her little trolley, let alone take a step unaided.

Norwegiana · 02/11/2008 20:43

I've got the same problem, but my toddler is 21 months. He only has one nap of about an hour, sometimes a bit longer, goes to bed easily around 7-7.30 pm and wakes up around 5 am, sometimes earlier. It's been a few weeks now, he used to sleep until 6 at least, and is waking a lot at night as well. We hired a sleep nanny who got him sleeping beautifully, but now a couple of months later it feels like we're back at square one.
