Talk to me about sheepskins...

Does anyone use one in the cot over/under the sheet for a newborn? DS is 2 and a half weeks old, and although he'll sleep in the cot if he's asleep when we put him in it, he won't settle in it terribly well.

We want to make the cot as appealing as possible, even if he doesn't settle in there for a few weeks/months yet, and as the temperature drops I'm wondering whether a sheepskin might make it a bit cosier (he is already swaddled, and loves being encased in anything (carrier, arms etc), so we want to make the cot as cosy as possible.

Also, are there any SIDS implications known? Obviously he goes down on his back, but his head will often turn to the side while he's asleep...

We had a sheepskin for DS1 (born in 1987!) and he loved it. Would sleep anywhere as long as it was there.

I tried to get one for DD2 when she was born last year and now find hardly anywhere sells them and they say you have to put a sheet over them, which really negates any benefit. I assume it is thought they are not safe. (DS1 slept on his front)

we have sheepskins- my girls sleep on them. but you MUST buy it from somewhere specifically for a baby- many standard sheepskins have traces of arsenic from the curing process- i think bowron are a baby friendly version.

You can buy baby sheepskins off Amazon... I've just ordered one for our DD to try and make her transition from moses basket to cot easier
