Moses or crib for newborn - space an issue...

I would like to have our baby (when born!) sleep in our bedroom until s/he is 6 months. I have been looking at gliding cribs and moses baskets. From what I understand, cribs are larger in size so should last longer, but we really don't have that much space in our bedroom, so I'm not sure one will fit. Or rather it will fit but there will be no room at all to walk round the bed, which I think will drive me potty for 6months.
So...how long do moses baskets last (on average)..? Can I realistically get away with one?

ours lasted less than 2 months (!!) so if I were you i'd go with the crib

moses basket lasted for 3 months as by then the baby is too small for it.

it lasted my big baby for 2 months so its depends on the size of the baby. (mine was 9lb 1oz)

Hmmm...
The moses basket isn't looking like a sensible option then...I really do want it to last more than 2 months...

Mine is still in hers at almost 4 months. She is a long baby so not sure how others have grown out of theirs so quickly She'll definitely be too big for it in a couple of weeks though so I reckon an average size baby would last 4.5 months in it

Our moses basket was a waste of money because lo hated it and I couldn't get her to settle. The crib has been good cos we could rock it (she doesn't need rocking now) and she can see out which I think helped. Everyones baby is different but I think if you've got one that has any trouble sleeping, the moses basket is harder to get them to settle. My sil's lo is only 10 wks and grown out of his basket.

DD's 15 wks and she's still in hers, trying desparately to get her used to her cotbed, but she's got a few weeks left yet before she's to big for it.
(maybe they range in size quite a bit? Mines Mamas & Papas)

I bought both as I was unsure which to get (bought them on ebay though, so turned out cheap as chips) - the moses basket was fab for about 8 weeks I would say and I am keeping ready fro #2 as I wouldn't be without - if nothing else, it is easy to move around the house for sleeps when they are tiny.

The crib - to be honest - wasn't that much bigger internally than the moses basket, but as we moved DS into his room at 8 weeks (he was soooo noisy he had to go) it was useful to have - I also think it helped with the transition into the big cot which he now has.

However, despite not regretting buying it (it did only cost me £3 mind you) I am getting rid of the crib and wouldn't bother with one again - but then, like I say, we moved DS into his room early.

At 8 weeks the moses basket was getting snug widthways for DS and at 12 weeks I would reckon he would pretty much fill it - and he's not big, just on the 25th percentile.

Go for the crib: my DS is growing so fast that at 5 wks his head is always right at the top when I go and get him out. When he moves into the cot he will be in his gro-bag as they really worked well for my DD.

I ALWAYS felt as if I was going to knock over my Moses basket as those stands are rubbish, It was like I had gone to all of that trouble making a precious baby and then balancing her on some sticks in a basket.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 02/10/2008 17:50

I don't know where you are in the UK but I ahve a Moses basket going free if you want it.

CarGirl · 02/10/2008 17:54

My longest dd only fitted in the moses basket for about 3 weeks and after that they all went straight into a cot! I didn't share a room with them though because we couldn't get a moses basket in the bedroom let alone a cot.....

mookickkick · 03/10/2008 11:46

My moses basket lasted 5 weeks, when DD had her head butted against the top in the morning. As we kept it in the cot next to our bed, there was no problem when we switched over.

I still think it's good to have a moses basket for the mobility. We were having to move DD into the coolest room in the flat during the heat wave.

MiniMarmite · 20/10/2008 21:21

we moved our LO out of the moses basket at 6 weeks. He is quite long (99th percentile) so he kept hitting the sides and waking himself up.

He's now in his big cot in our room but, as you say, they take up a lot of space.

My daughter slept in her moses basket until she was well over 6 months. She is skinny, but not excessively short (maybe slightly below average but not tiny). If you and your partner are short or average, then I'd say a moses basket would be fine for at least five months. The good thing about a moses basket is that they're easily movable so you can put it elsewhere during the day if you want to, eg in the living room so your baby can nap while you read or watch television.
