Transition from moses basket to cot

DD is 15 wks and is still sleeping in her moses basket within her cotbed at the moment. (She's always slept in her own room since birth, we only slept in with her on a futon for 6 nights)
We tried to let her sleep in the cot for the first time a few nights ago and she wiggled around so much it seemed to wake her up alot more.
Everytime I went in to check on her or to feed her she was squashed into a corner or half turned with her feed up against the bars. I could hear her on the monitor alot more during the night moving around and grunting alot more. I definately think she didn't sleep as well.
How do I get her more used to the cot?
Is 15 weeks too early to sleep in a cot?
Is it dangerous to put something in there with her like a V pillow to stop her wriggling herself awake so much? Is this normal and will it settle down as she spends more time in there?
Your opinions please??

My dd went into her cot at 9 weeks ish when she was getting too big for the moses basket (it was a smallish one!). She turned herself upside down the first night and got out of her covers so I put her in a sleeping bag and she didn't move as much then.
Is your dd in a sleeping bag?
I wouldn't put a pillow in with her (I think the SIDS guidelines warn against putting in pillows etc).
I don't think it is too early for her to be in a cot, and think her moving round should settle down.
Good luck!

I would definitely recommend a sleeping bag. At least they stay warm as they wriggle about - which they do!

sleeping bag prob the key

Our DD did a lot of travelling round her cot to start off with, I think she went in there at around 16 weeks too.

I used a cot bumper on the side she used to headbang but things have improved greatly over time, and especially when we introduced the sleeping bag.

You can buy sleep positioner things, but I don't have any experience of these. sorry!

cotbumpers not great idea

TettyLouBar · 30/09/2008 16:00

we've used grobags since day one!
she still manages to wriggle about ALOT! oh well I guess I'll just have to see what happens!

Cot bumpers are great bundle!

I agree that for older babies they can present a hazard, however ours is firmly tied to the cot and they are tucked firmly into the matress using towels shoved down the side so DD can't get underneath and potentially suffocate.

They have stopped her braining herself many times!

@ TettyLouBar - surprise surprise we're having the same problem! Well I tried DD in her cot a week or so ago for her daytime naps but she was waking up after 45 minutes. So I've decided to keep her in her moses basket (in her cot) until after her jabs next Tuesday and possibly her 4 month growth spurt if she'll still fit in it that long!!

Hopefully once those things are out of the way she'll be happier in a more wide open space... oh and in the meantime I'm putting her in her cot every day to play so she gets more used to it. But I was looking for some other solution that would ease the trasnsition... if you find one do let me know!

veryhungrykatypillar,

cotbumpers prevent good ventilation around the baby in a cot - this is why a cot doesn't have solid sides, surely?

a small bump to the head is better than an overheated baby. imo.

DD was in the moses basket in her cotbed for all her naps (and in with us at night)until 13 wks when she went into her own room in the cotbed.

We had the same problem. DD in a sleeping bag but turning herself around, waking up etc. It took a couple of weeks for her to get used to being in there.

TettyLouBar · 30/09/2008 21:16

Well, I'm gonna give it another go in a few weeks, but I must admit I'm tempted to wait until her next set of jabs!
That was a whole other beast to contend with last time!
Becky77 - I think our DD's must be vv similar!
Thanks ladies for the kind suggestions. She'll squeeze into her moses basket for a few more weeks yet....

We definitely don't have a problem with ventilation, cot bumpers don't go all the way around the cot anyway.

She is not overheated, trust me I am the most neurotic mother in the world.
