Going from 2 naps to 1

Re. my thread last week about switching a 1yo to 1 daytime nap, did it take yours a while to adjust? Were they still very tired at first? Poor little DS is so tired and it feels wrong to keep him awake when he so obviously needs the sleep, but everything is so much better for me on one nap. He now doesn't scream the place down & hit me for an hour when I try to get him to nap, and he tends to sleep longer in the morning. Is that selfish of me? I am putting my needs above his, really

Anyway, I want to persevere with one nap, to see if he might start napping for longer and sleeping through at night, in which case one nap would probably be enough for him. What do you think, should I carry on with one nap?

Also, if yours woke up very early (this morning was 05.30) would you give in and let them have 2 naps that day, or would you keep them up to try and reinforce the routine?

Haven't experienced this yet with my dd (she's 10 months) but I worked for 6 years at a nursery in the under-2's section so saw lots of kids transitioning to one sleep from to.

Generally they went to one sleep aged somewhere between 12-18 months, depended on the child.

What often happened was they would be OK on one sleep for a few days then would have a bit of a "catch up" day where they had two sleeps. This could go on for a few weeks, or not at all, again depended on teh child.

If your ds is taking ages to go down for his second sleep that's a surefire sign he's ready for just one. We would try to gradually keep the child up a little longer in the morning, so their one sleep got later and they weren't too shattered by late afternoon iyswim.

Of course I meant transitioning from two sleeps to one, not the other way round!

Poor DD2 is down to one nap and has been for awhile as DD1 wakes her up if she can. At least on 1 nap she sleeps a little deeper!
Since she did go down to one nap (about a month ago) she has started to sleep a lot better, she still wakes for a BF but goes straight back to sleep and is still asleep now (although that is a one off, they are normally both up by 7)

If she wakes early I let her go if she needs to, normally by going out for a walk with her in the carrier or a buggy so she can sleep if she wants, sometime though she hangs on until 1 and normal nap time (through pure stubbornness most likely)

Sorry, she is 1 next week, and sleeps 1-half 3 and then 7-7 overnight.
