Did your baby sleep through early?

ie 8 hours at night before 12 weeks (I don't expect miracles). If so, do you think it was just luck/genetics, or did you do something to make it happen....and if so, what?
dd is a much better sleeper than ds (does three and three and a half hour stints at night which seems like a miracle compared to ds's totally erratic sleep cycle - woke every 20mins some awful nights!) but obviously any tips would be appreciated!

DD slept 10-7 from 5 weeks. She would then wake, feed and sleep for another 3 hours! She's my first and I had no idea what I was doing, so I don't know if it was what I did or if I was blessed with a sleepy one, but I'm happy to share what I did.

During the day I would have her downstairs in her bouncy chair wherever I was and she would fall asleep when she wanted. I carried on as normal - tv, radio, hoovering, none of it made any difference if she was tired she would sleep. She went in the moses basket after the 10pm feed and I would go to bed too and watch TV in bed. If I was out she would sleep in the buggy or car seat. The same happened if we went out at night. She spent many a night snoring away in the car seat under the pub table (non-smoking area of course). I never woke her to feed her, and when she started falling asleep before the 10pm bottle I just put her to bed and she seemed to happily sleep through longer without needing it. Just like GF describes really!! .

thanks - dd loves to feed all evening, which is OK, so I can live in hope. Very of some of you!

8 hours a night? DD and DS1 slept 8 hours around the age of 2 I think.

jabberwocky · 03/03/2005 22:51

Ds was a horrible sleeper for most of his first year. I think I caused some of it by picking him up too soon (Don't ever read anything by Dr.Sears ) but some may have just been his temperament too.

oatcake · 03/03/2005 22:53

not recommended by HVs, but ds went in his own room at 9 weeks (not planned) because I had a violent vomiting bug. he woke at 3am that first night and then from 10 till 6 or 7 the following morning.

I think we both disturbed each other so much in the night that we were waking each over up.

binkybetsy · 03/03/2005 22:57

Why don't HV advise babies to go into their own rooms early on Oatcake? Both of mine went in at 2 weeks old!

oatcake · 03/03/2005 22:59

there is an increase in cot deaths in babies who go into their own rooms before 6 months. It's thought that our snuffling and huffing are a way of reminding susceptible babies to breath...

binkybetsy · 03/03/2005 23:06

Good grief I completely missed that one! My kids only slept when they went into their own rooms. Both of mine slept right through at 7 and 8 weeks. Both had colds at 5mo which created havoc with their sleep patterns, which led to us using cc to re establish them. After a month of no sleep I might add.
I'm sure someone told me that babies who sleep through early on or have few difficulties are often the ones who suddenly start being a nightmare do deal with at around 1yo, but I can't remember who told me.

oatcake · 03/03/2005 23:11

well, mine's 3 and a half and still an angel sleeper!

binkybetsy · 03/03/2005 23:12

you lucky so and so oatcake.

oatcake · 03/03/2005 23:13

yep. another reason NOT to have another... just in case...

chocfreeclary · 03/03/2005 23:22

Aloha my ds1 was 7 months before he stopped waking at night (only once tho), but dd slept though (and I mean 7pm to 6am) at 9 wks! Ds2 did the same at about 12 wks (tho is all went pear-shaped when he needed solds but that's another story).
I do think to some extent it was to do with routine; we didn't have much of a one for DS1 and used to settle him to sleep for ages; DD clearly wanted to go to bed early at a young age so we quickyl got into a bed, milk, story plan at a few weeks old and she would sleep from 7am to ? 2am or so at really young. She was put down and would drop off on her own which was much better than that creeping out of the room nonsense I did with Ds1.
Did something similar with DS2 and tho it took him a little bit longer, he got the idea too.

ds was 6 weeks old when he slept through 7 hours..(and being 7 weeks prem he wouldnt have even been born yet). dd was four weeks when she slept 6 hours...and thank f**k for that..shes a real screamer and didnt sleep at all in the night for the first two weeks..know that isnt a long time but it sure feels like it when youre in so much pain from cs that you cant even get out of bed!

samwifewithkid · 05/03/2005 09:42

my dd slept through from 6 months, that was only when she was put into her own room at 5 months and refused a night feed. She soon got the message and gave up asking when she got no response. I think this time round (Im 36 wk pg) I am going to pump the next one full as possible in the evening with milk (im bf) and hope for the best I think a good stock up in the evening must be the answer as I couldn't really be bothered to do this first time around.

wheresmyfroggy · 05/03/2005 09:45

dd did about six hours from 4 days old, this progressed to eight hours from about six weeks and now at 17 months does about 11/12 hours.

We think we were incredibly lucky but hope it was actually something we did as no.2 is due in six weeks!

tamula · 05/03/2005 09:56

My sister who had my neice on 17th Dec. Puts her down at 7pm wakes her at 10pm for a feed and she stays down until 7/8am!! I'm pleased for her but quietly jealous as I'm due in a couple of weeks and I'll probably not have the same luck!

Jimjams · 05/03/2005 10:19

ds3 has had a few 8/9 hour stints this week (7 hours last night).

He's awake a lot during the day (not sure why- maybe because we go out a lot/other children here), and feeds a lot during the day. Also started sleeping for longer since getting the amby baby hammock.

We have no routine, I'm more attachment than controlled crying, it's just happened. If he does wake I bring him into bed so disruption is minimal.

Newbarnsleygirl · 05/03/2005 10:26

My dd slept through from her last feed at 10:30pm till 7-8am from 6 weeks.
I think it was because we woke her up to give her that last feed.

Needless to say when the hv suggested I should drop the last feed I was dreading it.

It was ok though.

KathH · 05/03/2005 10:32

dd1 slept thru from 7 - 7 from being about a week old - think she was just a very lazy baby tho! WIth dd2 and ds1 they slept thru from about 6 wks ds2 slept thru from about 8 wks but is just going thru the i'm 5 months old and i think its really clever to want to play at 4am.

DD1 slept through from 11pm until 7am at 8 weeks, first night thought it was a fluke as she had just had her first needles, but continued. She is now 18 months and sleeps from 7pm until 9am at least and still has 1 to 2 hours sleep in the day. DD2 is 9 weeks old and I thought I would suffer this time round but she slept from 12.30am until 7am at six weeks old. Last three nights she has slept from 11.30pm until 8.30am so I feel very blessed. I always ensured that they were feed up during the day, at least every three hours, then the last feed I always top up with 2 or 3 ounce of formula (am breast feeding) to ensure she is full. Also I make sure she falls asleep in her basket or cot, never on me. Also not with a dummy as if she stirs in the night she looks for the dummy to go back to sleep.

Shell150 · 05/03/2005 14:45

My DD slept from 8-8 when she was 2 wks so very luck for me, She was a little hungry monster during the day and still had bout 4hrs during the day if she didnt she was tossing and turning all nite but not awake i bottle fed and she took about 8oz every 2-21/2 hrs H.V said she was taking 2 much but she was missing out feeding at night so i decided it was ok She was also in bath bed bottle story routine (Bit young for a story but hey better starting as you mean to go on) only time she was up during the night was when she had broncholitis at xmas she was 5 1/2 months luckly she went back to her normal routine once she had got better Don't think ill have another one for long time incase i have a non sleeper

Kiwicath · 05/03/2005 19:24

Me too very lucky. My breastfed little chap slept thru 7-7 (with dream feed at 10.30) from 6 weeks. I didn't do anything except go thru same routine every night ie bath, bed, boob. I was willing to give him boob whenever he woke up - he just never did . Still a fab sleeper at 14 months. #2 on it's way, hoping things will be the same.

NomDePlume · 05/03/2005 19:27

NO, it took her to reach 7 months before she did. It seemed that everyone in our circle (had babies at a similar time) had little ones who slipped effortlessly into all night sleeping . Although I have to say that from 7 months onwards DD was very settled and has never has sleep problems since, whereas friends with 'early night sleepers' (IYSWIM), seemed to go on to develop sleep problems in early toddlerhood.
