Any 1yo's on one daytime nap?

DS has just turned 1 and is tired all the time (he's a rubbish sleeper at night, so is tired int he day). I know 'they' say that sleep breeds sleep and they generally sleep better at night the more they sleep in the day, but this doesn't seem to be true for DS. But his daytime naps are getting to be a living hell (basically takes an hour of screaming, kicking, hitting, biting etc. before I can get him to sleep). Today he refused his morning sleep at all and has just gone to sleep really easily for his afternoon nap. So I'm wondering whether having just one nap might work better for us. I think they are generally on 2 naps at this age yet though? And he does need a lot of sleep in the day (he wakes at 5ish so is exhausted by 9am) so it feels wrong to keep him up when he is tired, but I just thought I'd try.

Are any of your 1 year old's on only one nap a day and if so are they ok on it?

DS1 dropped his morning nap at about 12 months. He had been doing 9:30ish for 30 mins or less and then 12:30ish for 1.5hrs approx.

Once he was down to one nap he slept from 12-2:30 most of the time. It was easier than I thought, but I found taking him out each morning a lot easier so he was kept busy, and then he might nod off for 5 mins in pushchair on way out or home if he was desperate!

He slept much better all round once he was down to one nap.

Am longing for the day my 8.5 month old DTs are down to one nap so we can actually do things in the morning but at the mo they are gagging for more sleep by 8:30 sometimes so think it will be a while yet...

Oh my goodness, that is what DS does almost to the minute! Except did yours sleep through the night? He could probably cope with one nap if he slept at night. In that case I am going to foolishly hope that mine will be the same as yours Thanks, that's given me some hope!

DS is 13 months and morning nap is very hit and miss now. No way he'll go at 9am as he used to, but sometimes he's doing from 9.30-10am. I'm tempted just to cut it out. DD is in nursery now in the mornings and it would mean DH (who is a SAHD) could get him out and about to some activities in the morning and still be back at nursery for 11.30am.

Sycamoretree · 24/09/2008 13:52

Oh, I should also mention he does about 12.30 to 2pm at lunchtime, so pretty much on track with the rest of you guys!

He did sleep through the night (from about 7 months I think), although I am pretty sure he slept better / longer once on one nap.

A friend who has a DS just turning one has been amazed at the difference cutting down to one nap has made. I think he used to wake at 5/5:30 every morning and now he sleeps to 6:30 or so.

My dd went to 1 daytime nap around 14 months, around 12 for between 1-3 hours. She sleeps better at night now too.

Egg · 24/09/2008 13:55

And I do remember being a bit reluctant to drop the morning nap as it was when I used to have a bath and get chores done but the lovely long 2 hour plus nap at lunch soon made up for it!

The main problem I did have was I had to give him lunch by 11:15am or so as he was way too tired to eat properly otherwise.

Sorry me again. You will be pleased to know that DS1 still sleeps for usually more than two hours at lunch and sometimes three at the age of 2.5 .

Tinkjon · 24/09/2008 14:12

Oh now you'll all have to stop this because you're making me too excited about the prospect of him sleeping better at night and I won't be able to handle it if my DS isn't the same as yours

DD (now 5.5) had a 2 hour lunchtime nap until at least 3, I think it was maybe even 3 and a half. I didn't realise at the time what a great sleeper she was, but now I have DS (and frankly the 'D' is pushing it ) I know how good she was!

my DS dropped to one at 11 months and he sleeps better for it. has a nice 2hour sleep from 12ish. need to remember to get his lunch in early tho. It was hard dropping to one for a couple of weeks so just went with flo. if he wanted 2 we did it but if it was a later afternoon nap we limited it.

Oh wow, I have been having problems recently with my 14 months old, who started waking up earlier and earlier in the morning. I wonder if he is ready to drop the morning nap? Not sure how to drop it, as don't see him lasting till lunch without a short nap in the morning. He did drop it at one point when he was before one, but then with teething and illness he needs more sleep again, which now got him into that habit again.
Any advice? Shall I just try to keep him up during the weekend perhaps to see if it makes nights better? Another thing perhaps is to make an afternoon nap shorter?
Thank you ladies

My ds who's 18 months dropped a nap at 1 too. Only thing was he dropped his afternoon one

He wakes at 6, we both he goes back to bed around 9 for an hour and a half, then that him til 7pm. I cant imagne the luxuryof having 2 hours peace in an afternoon. Having said that it means we can go out without having to worry about naps. Plus snuggling down in my bed with him at 9am is very decadent!!

Frankensteinshughjarsssss · 07/10/2008 07:21

My dd is 11 months and hates having two nap. I have been considering just giving her one. Think I will do it now I've read this.
Guess I've just got to keep her awake till 12ih then, and get lunch in before she goes down
