franch the actual hammock and stand bit is just under £150. I also bough 4 sheets and a snuggler (to keep an infant in place). TBH ds3 doesn't need the snuggler though- he's quite big for a 7 week old so I only used it the first night.

jimjams - I have just ordered one of these after seeing your post and looking at the website - they look fab! Can you tell me if you are using the same number layers (sheets and blankets) as you would in a crib or moses basket? The hammocks look quite snug so I wondered if maybe I ought to use fewer coverings?

DD couldn't roll over in the hammock until months after she was rolling over well on flat ground -- she was over 6 months and able to roll both directions by herself, and they're allowed to sleep on their stomachs at that point.

DD sleeps without covers, in footed sleepers of appropriate weight for the temperature. I don't know whether it's her or the hammock, but when we tried breaking the anti-SIDS rules by putting a blanket over her, she just wriggled until she was on top of it.

I've been using the same covers as the moses basket- but he isn't getting as cold.

he's started sleeping for 8 hour stretches at night as well

Thanks jimjams - our hammock arrived today - just need the baby to put in it now! . 8 hrs sleep at 8weeks sounds amazing! They really are as good as they say then?

Jimjams - another question if you don't mind? The leaflet says to put the baby with it's head towards the head end but this goes against the "feet to foot" advice - what do you do please?

Jimjams · 05/03/2005 19:24

bonym- you have to put them with their tummy beneath the coathanger type thing otherwise it doesn't balance. Becausae its quite narrow and squishy (and if they're little they're in the positioning rolls) they don't seem to move. I've just tucked the blankets in at the side. At the moment I've even got one of those matress monitor things shoved underneath at the foot end (won't do that when ds3 is bigger as it would be uncomfortable). DS3 used to shoot all over his moses basket but he just seems to stay in one position in this.

Alternatively you could use a sleeping bag. I did that for a couple of nights, but then he fell deeply asleep a bt earlier than expected so I didn't have him in the sleeping bag.

The main problem I had was with leaky disposable nappies. the nappies seem really thin these days and the position he is in meant they were leaking out the back. As I use reusables anyway during the day I just put a wrap (a comfy one- either cotton or fleece) over the top of the nappy to hold it in place. No leaks since. He was fine with newborn size- just at themoment he's quite small for his size range and they don't seem to fasxten very well. Might be worth buying one fleece wrap or something though if you haven't got anything just in case.

Jimjams, not to hijack the thread, but I've done a CAT to you. Have some pictures to send but can't get them to go on the MN part. If you just send a blank reply I will send them through Outlook.

Tetley · 05/03/2005 19:56

Just to hijack this thread (sorry!) - I've got one of these which my mum got us from New Zealand. We used it for ds2 (to keep him out of the way of ds1!). Anyway - the point of this is that we've now finished with it & I haven't yet got around to putting it on Ebay, so if anyone is interested then get in touch!

I can't remember what make it is - but I have got the details somewhere & can dig them out. It's an unbleached cotton one.

Thanks Jimjams - really helpful. Only a couple more weeks to go (hopefully) and I can try all this out!

I have one that was used for ds1 until he was a year old and is now being used for ds2 who is 9 months. We used it from birth with both of them. With ds1 we used it with the mattress in place. With ds2 we use it without the mattress. As he is used to sleeping in a sling on me, this works much better for him. We use/used grow bags on both of them and no blankets. I think you can use it well past 1 year old without a problem and we probably will this time.

Boompi · 08/04/2005 16:37

Tetley - have you still got the hammock?
