We have had success with NCSS. I can't speak for the nighttime thing. Our problem was that my 5 month old (at the time) was a non-napper who desperately wanted to nap... I felt like she was screaming at me to figure out a way to make it work.

I did a week of sleep logs. I recorded times when she first showed 'signs of sleepiness.' They were occurring at the same time every day. So I started implementing our nap routine (2 stories and a song) 15-20 before her usual signs-of-sleepiness times. Worked like a charm! I had been waiting until she was too sleepy and hence unable to settle herself. Pantley (and others) emphasise the importance of catching the window of sleepy-but-not-overtired. That was the key point for us (and the sleep logs helped us find the window).

What I like about the book is that it is gentle to us mums, too. I had been a wreck... feeling guilty about leaving her to cry and feeling guilty about not leaving her to cry. She encouraging and gives a whole menu of techniques to try and implement for good sleep habits.

As for it taking a long time... for me the times when we did the CC seemed interminable and 10 minutes felt like hours. Then again, others swear by it. To each her own, I say!

Good luck!

Bless you eandz... a road of discovery awaits! And good for you thinking of these things ahead of time.

We're coming up on weaning time soon, so who knows how sleep will change with that.

I used it to get DS to nap, and once he napped properly his nighttime sleep got much better.

She is nice and unlike some other books, she doesn't say that if the suggestion doesn't work it's your fault and you're doing it wrong. Just that it may take time or to try another tactic.

It helped and he started to settle more quickly at night as well.

I started with the NCSS at five months when DS's sleeping suddenly went haywire. It took a month till I got him to nap twice a day but has improved steadily since then. He is 11 months now and will sleep 11 hours through the night. Not every night though. And he does two naps.

DS is just about to turn 2 (on Thursday) and we have used some of the techniques in the book over the past year.

He was a pretty terrible sleeper but has gradually improved, and now (mostly) sleeps 10 hrs or so a night in his cot, and naps in his cot during the day.

He was bf a lot during the night and it was driving me nuts! We successfully night-weaned at around 15 months (tried at 12 months but too stressful). Also used it to stop bf to sleep.

I found it most useful because it was non-judgemental, was reassuring that I hadn't 'spoilt' him by not leaving him to cry. It's not a quick fix book tho...

We're working with some of the strategies in there atm. Everything's out of the window with this heat, but for the 3 days we were trying before then, I was seeing small improvements already. (DS is 6 months)

Definitely a long haul thing though.

I didn't have the patience for it with dc2. So I don't think I should be posting on your thread [shuffles off...].
