DS1 has ALWAYS (since he was 6 months old) gone to bed at 8pm, DS2 and 3 followed suit (they're 4 1/2 and 13 months).

However when I was talking to DS1 a few weeks ago, before he moved into a room on his own, I said that we would discuss him having a later bedtime once he had his own room. He moved into his room at the weekend, and I've just told him he can go to bed at 9pm instead.

Is this too late? He usually gets up around 6am (and comes downstairs), but doesn't actually "have" to get up until around 8am, so if he sleeps longer as a result it shouldn't be the end of the world. Am I going to totally regret having one of the DS's up for a whole extra hour........or is there a possibility that DS1's behaviour may improve (at home) as a result of more "time" that's spent just with me??

I would have done exactly the same as you and your ds1 will love the extra time with you I'm sure.

If it all goes tits up change your closcks to all be 45 minutes fast then you'll only have him around for 15/20 mins tops

Romy7 · 07/07/2008 20:23

omg.
9? at 7?

dd1 (8) goes to bed at 9 on a friday, largely because brownies doesn't finish until 8.30, but the rest of the week she's in bed by 8... and up at 7...

my dcs are horrible when they are tired - yours must naturally need less sleep!

yes - he doesn't need a lot of sleep - when he was sharing with DS2 he frequently didn't go to sleep until 9pm (whispering, giggling etc), but I have heard him up and around downstairs just after 5am before now!!!

DS2 is the total opposite though - gets tired and grumpy if he has a late night.

I'm looking for answers to this as much as you really, dd1 will be 9 in a couple of weeks and currently goes to bed between 7pm and 8pm, really don't think we should move her bedtime as she's hard enough to get out of bed as it is but dp keeps saying we need to let her stay up later soon, I think if we let her stay up later say 8.30 or 9pm then how late will she be wanting to stay up by the time shes 11 or 12? I think while she's young and sleeps we should try to keep it as early as possible so that when she is older she can stay up a bit later, I don't think she should be up any later than 9pm until she is leaving school tbh (unless weekends when I will prob let her stay up until she's tired)

When I was younger I wasn't allowed to stay up any later than 9pm but I was allowed to go to my room and have tv or radio on or read if I wanted until i fell asleep.

dd1 is 8. bed at 7.30-sh

TheFallenMadonna · 07/07/2008 20:26

DS is nearly 7, goes to bed at 7.30 and reads for 10 minutes. Falls asleep pronto and wakes at 7am.

LoveMyGirls · 07/07/2008 20:27

I go to bed by 10pm at the very latest and see no need for dc's to be up later than me until they are at college, am I very old fashioned?

Niecie · 07/07/2008 20:28

My DS1 (8 next week) goes to bed about 8.45pm and doesn't usually go to sleep before 9.30pm which is fine 9pm for your DS sounds OK to me. They need an average of 10 hours sleep at 7 or 8 so as long as he has time to sleep that long and he can get up in the morning it should be OK.

If you don't want him with you the whole extra hour, would he go to bed and read for a bit? That is what my DS does for 20 mins or so before he settles down.

FAQ · 07/07/2008 20:28

LMG - if my DC's are up later than me before they're at college they'll be in big trouble - average bedtime for me 12.30am lol. Quite normal for me to go to bed well after 1am though.

DS is 7 and is in bed by 7.45 - he usually reads until 8 & then goes straight off to sleep. He wakes up around 7.15ish

ninja · 07/07/2008 20:30

my dd is 5 goes to bed at 7.30ish - but doesn't go to sleep until 9.30 or later. I guess what I'm saying is that if your ds doesn't need as much sleep as some other kids then it'll be fine - as long as he doesn't mess around at bedtime as you do need some time to yourself

FAQ · 07/07/2008 20:32

no he's (well all of them actually) are really good at bedtime, I count myself extremely lucky in that respect, especially now I'm on my own with them. When I say bedtime - they go

ds1 and 2 (6.3 and 3.7) go to bed around 8 but it's sometimes 9. If they haven't dropped off when dh gets home at 9ish then they get up again to see him too. Ds2 just stopped napping last week, so will need to go earlier, I think.

If you're concerned, I'd give him an alarm clock (we have one with a cd of favourite music in it) set it for a sensible time like 7.15, and tell him that he musn't get up before it comes on. You'll prob find that he'll get used to sleeping longer.

LovelyDear · 07/07/2008 20:44

my DS is 8 and he's still pottering upstairs. on his way though. dd (4) usually in by 8. in an ideal world they'd be in sooner but, hey, i've given up that particular battle.
