My 5 month old has flipped over tonight and is sleeping soundly on his tummy for the first time. I don't think he can roll back over yet (I've never seen him do it during the day he generally rolls onto tummy is happy for 10 mins and then yells to be rolled back over)

Is it OK to leave him in that position or should I roll him back over????? I sleep on my tummy.

All advise gratefully received.

Have you tried rolling a pillowcase and putting it under him so he's not on his tummy? I don't know if this is still recommended though so I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to let you know.

I would roll him back over very carefully.

rapunzelle · 03/07/2008 21:16

being dense where does the pillowcase go?
Thanks for speedy reply

If he's lying on his side put it nexy to where his tummy is, if he rolls over he will be stopped by the pillowcase. In theory.

rapunzelle · 03/07/2008 21:21

OK Thanks
Have just been in to check him he is sleeping beautifully, knees slightly bent, bottom up and head turned to side. Must I really move him? And, if I don't will I be waking every 20 mins to go and check on him? Hmmmm

I would. Sorry.

lazarou · 03/07/2008 21:23

YOu will not sleep for worrying. Go and turn him.

MmeLindt · 03/07/2008 21:26

My paediatrician said that once they start turning over onto their tummy, then it is ok to leave them.

That is the theory.

In my case, I gently rolled them back over onto their back and put a rolled up towel in front of the tummy so they could not roll over again. Not because they could sleep better, because otherwise I would not be able to sleep.

Once they were a bit older and rolling back and forward during the day I let them sleep on their tummy.

I almost wish I didn't know. My gut feeling is that it's fine, but you would just never forgive yourself..... Best go and turn him then

Rapunzelle, have you got a sound and movement monitor?

rapunzelle · 03/07/2008 21:35

Just a bog standard sound monitor

If you're worried then buy a movement one. The angelcare monitor is good or the tommy tippee one. I used them for my two. I still use one for my two year old. It's just reassuring when you wake up in the night and see the flasing green light.

OK so I rolled him over - an hour later he was back on his front, I tried to improvise a bolster but he got around that and slept the rest of the night on his tummy. Think I need to accept that this is what he does.

Perhaps I can call it 'baby led sleeping'
