What time does your 6 year old go to bed and to sleep?

Struggling with working out if my 6 year old is overtired or under tired, on the best days, sleep is by 7:45 on the worst it takes up to an hour longer, we have to stay watching them fall asleep, I know I also need to tackle that at some point.

DD is 6 next month, she’s in bed by 8:30pm, asleep by 9pm and awake between 7-7:30am. She’s been towards the mid to lower end of the sleep needs scale so 10-11 hours seems to suit her, and us, nicely. We had a few months of 5am wake ups when she was 3 and that was tough so I’m thankful for the 7am+ starts and that we have time to spend as a family and with friends in the evening.

Ours is 830, but i'll take that over the toddler years when she wouldn't go down till 11pm. She seems to need less sleep, doesn't nap, and goes down from 8.30-7ish depending on the day.

Everyone will be different.
mine isn’t in bed before 8.30. Sometimes as late as 9.30. He does activities 4 nights a week so wind down is 8.30. He’s up 7.15 through the week and sleeps in on a Saturday.

Thought after reading this thread maybe we were being a bit strict on upstairs at 6 and would try being a bit more relaxed about it.

Won't go into all the details but everyone is overstimulated, over tired, crying and I'm regretting my life choices 🤪😅

We never did the sitting in a chair in their room until they drop off to sleep. When we tried it, early on, it seemed to just keep them awake.

My 5 year old is very often just sitting down to tea at half 6 - I'm always amazed by people starting a bedtime routine at that time! But we do baths, pyjamas, teeth, story quickly compared to a lot of people I think. They are normally in bed for 8 and fall asleep quickly, though sometimes it's slightly later. 7.5 year old is rarely asleep before 9.

Asleep between 8pm and 8:30pm. Up around 6:30am, so around 10h per night, 10.5h on a good night! He’s asleep very quickly of a night time and the ‘bedtime routine’ is 20 minutes max. No way could I cope with bedtime being dragged out for hours.

Now it’s summer we go out for at least an extra hour of exercise between 6pm and 7pm. Bike plus football or basketball. That’s on top of physical activities (swimming, gym or cricket) after school x 3 days per week. Definitely helps.

Mine is 7 now but is still on 6yo bed times - usually settles for sleep around 10pm. Wakes up between 7:30-8:30

We do home education so do t have to get up at a set time for school or work and have settled into this.

We aim for shower/bath time at 8-8:30

In bed by sometime around 7:30, she then reads until 8:15, turns her light off, and is asleep fairly soon after. She’s always been pretty good at bedtime in terms of not needing reminders - she’ll turn her light off at 8:15 without prompting.

Our 4 yr old is a nightmare at bedtime, so she balances out the good bedtimes for our eldest!

My 7yo goes to sleep around 8.45, up around 6.15, sometimes later.

When my eldest was 6 she was asleep by 8 and awake between 6-7am. She needed more sleep.

Is she year 1 or year 2? There are some very good readers in DS’ class (year 1) but reading alone for 45 minutes at age 6 is very impressive.

My almost 6 year old goes to bed for books at 7. Sleep by 8:15. Wakes some time after 6 but stays in his room playing or reading until his owl turns orange at 6:50.

underthehawthorntree · 28/06/2026 20:36

Our 6 YO is driving us potty at the moment by going to bed at 9pm or sometimes even later. She wakes up at a normal time 6:30/7:30ish and never shows any signs of overtiredness. She insists someone is with her or follows us out of her room a million times. It's so so hard because we are getting almost literally no time to ourselves as our toddler wakes up at 5am most days.

Yr 2, so she’s nearly 7. But she’s always been a voracious reader. My husband reads literally ~100 books a year so she’s definitely got that from him.

My daugher will be 6 in August and as a rule is in bed by 7.30pm and fast asleep by 8pm!

underthehawthorntree · 29/06/2026 11:17

Some quite smug people commenting on here as though the fact their children are asleep by 7:30pm is entirely down to their brilliant parenting. As a parent of 3 children I can tell you it doesn't work like that...you get what you get and sometimes all the routines in the world don't help.

I’ve tried in vain to get my 6 year old to bed before 8.30. He just isn’t tired and rarely goes to sleep before 9. He’s up any time between 6 and 6.30. Also missing my evenings.
