Toddler travel bed dilemma

DS1 is 2y4m and still in a cot at home, I know that if the sides were down he likely would be running to the door/around his room and not going to sleep, so hoping we can keep them up a while longer!
Issue is we’ve got a few trips planned over the summer and I think the travel cot (Bjorn one, last used about 7m ago) is now something he could jump/climb out of… so what do we do? He’s never slept in an open bed/mattress on the floor.
Any ideas? Are there any good older toddler cot/beds?
Thanks! X

I’d do the transition ASAP at home. We went to a single bed at 12 months. Makes it much easier to go away as we just take an airbed or use a mattress on the floor.

Are you going to a hotel or holiday cottage? Do they provide the travel cot? If so, it will be huge and not something most 2 year olds would climb out of. Otherwise, lots of inflatable toddler beds available that pack up easily. If you are sharing a room, this is no problem. If you have a portable travel gate, you might be able to put that on the room door.

I don’t think we’re ready for the transition at home at all. We have a newborn and are already beyond capacity, we don’t think our toddler will take the transition well..or rather will result in lots of escapes and not sleeping through any more.. Hoping to keep the cot as long as possible but realise this makes it tricky when going away now.
No we’re going to stay at friends and an air bnb so have to provide our own travel cot..

We just take our cot mattress if we have space, and set up a bed on the floor. Is that an option?

HappyAsASandboy · 16/06/2026 14:26

I would take a cot mattress for the floor too, then back to the cot with sides when you return. Different beds in different places is absolutely fine, just put him back in the cot when you return home.

@LittleGreenShoots thanks for this idea, we definitely could do! I’m worried about him not staying put but fingers crossed with DH in there with him, he will.. it’s just such a different set up to at home where he sleeps well in his cot, without either of us in with him, and he isn’t able to wander the room!

we used a cuggl super light travel cot for my daughter right up until 3ish

She was never a climber though and even though I reckon she could have gotten out of her cot at home she just didnt do it and i felt pretty safe leaving her in this travel cot

does your son ever attempt to climb out or do you think you could trust him?

I did use a bed guard on a trip when she was about 3 and tbh I don't think she realised she could get out when she woke (out of habit probably) and called me to come get her

my 2 year old boy on the other hand has been in a bed since 18 months as he just hopped out of the cot as soon as he wasa able
