'Can't force a kid to sleep'

Or can you??

2.8 month old dropping last nap but is soooo sleepy around her old nap time. But she can just about stay awake through a buggy trip, car ride, quiet time... no chance of patting or rocking to sleep any more.

But she is terrible in the evenings...

I guess there is no going back (or is there?)

You can create an environment that makes it more likely that they sleep.

but you can’t make them sleep

Just have to power through. It took a few weeks before my dd to adjusted to one nap, but it was just impossible to get her down for two. She was a nightmare for those weeks but she did adjust!

I would guess that, if she's managing to stay away in the buggy and the car, then she probably won't go down any other way either.

WhatNoRaisins · 20/03/2026 09:09

Its an adjustment when they stop napping but it can get better.

I meant 2.8 years old obviously sorry. I feel like this is way to early to have no nap. And I also think she still needs it given how tired and cranky she is getting

It's a very normal age to drop the last nap. You might find she naps occasionally but not regularly. Persevere with quiet time so everyone still gets a bit of down time and she has the chance to sleep if she wants.

it's a very average age to stopping napping? I don't know why you think it's early. Mine is 18 months and I'm really considering trying her with no nap, we cap it short as it is. She'll adjust in a few weeks, hopefully she'll sleep longer overnight. if she can stay awake in the buggy / car then she definitely doesn't need it! You can't force her to sleep, and I don't know why you'd want to.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 20/03/2026 10:24

Totally normal age to drop the nap (unfortunately!!) . Just bring bedtime forward by an hour.

Coolbeansjeans28 · 26/03/2026 12:22

Its just the transition as it was when they were younger and dropping number of naps. For a while, my DC asked for a nap at their nap time and id be there for 30 mins plus trying to get them to sleep. I swapped it for 'quiet time' where we had a cuddle / relax in bed and read some books. The rest seemed to help but evenings were sad for a bit until they got used to it!

TwiceTwoDouble · 26/03/2026 12:27

My twins dropped their afternoon nap at just two. That wasn’t particularly unusual among their peers.

2.8 isn’t really that early to be dropping it.

But I remember how hard it was when they dropped it so sympathies.

HootyMcB00b · 26/03/2026 12:40

2.8 years isn't the same as 2 years 8 months, if that's what you're meaning.
