How do I stop him waking himself up with a HUUUge burp?!

Ds is 6.5 months. He has a bath and then I feed him and he falls asleep, and I put him in his cot usually around 8ish. (I'm allergic to 'routines', but he got HIMSELF into a pattern). All is good, but then for the last few nights he wakes with an almighty scream after about half an hour. I dash upstairs, pick him up, and he lets out the HUUUgest belch imaginable. Then I have to feed him again, and sometimes he'll go back to sleep, but sometimes he won't even though he's tired. I've tried winding him after the feed, but to no avail - I never need to wind him during the day, so perhaps I'm just rubbish at it. How do I stop wind waking him up every night? Poor little mite, it's obviously very uncomfortable, and seems to wake him suddenly from a really deep sleep.

You could try feeding him on your right side last if BF or resting on that side if he has a bottle. In other words to he's tilted to his left. This position (but don't ask me why) is known to help with wind. If he can turn over by himself now, it may be OK to sleep him on his left side also (though obv you have to make your own mind up since proper advice is on the back). I do this with DS since he had the same issue for ages.

My DS often does little burps while feeding like this but not on the other side. You could also try burping him between sides or in the middle of a bottle to minimise the remaining wind.

Other than that, no help I'm afraid.

I'm breastfeeding Wilf. Thanks for the advice, I'll definatly try feeding him on right breast last, and winding him on that side.

Any other suggestions?

Hi sushistar we had the same problem for months. In the end, what worked best for me was to lay him down on his back on his changing station for five mins and then pick him up = and when i picked him up he would do his huge burp and then go off to sleep.

We used to be able to set our watches by the half hour thing !!

the other good position that I found was to lay him across my knees, that normally used to get a big burp too.

failing all that, in the end i used to go upstairs after 25 mins and just sssh him back to sleep without picking him up and evenutally he stopped waking. but i only did that if i felt there wasn't wind.

HTH !

FWIW it does get better !

so glad I found this!

We have had a really bad week with DS (8 months) waking up after 30min-1hr asleep and giving a HUUUUGE burp, sometimes followed by his 8oz bedtime feed and half his tea!
It's only 2 weeks since he started sleeping through the night (the same day he got his 1st tooth) and now we're up the whole evening again trying to reduce the sloshing inside before putting him down again.

Bought some Gripe water today, had to put it in the milk as DS just kept grinning and dribbling it back out off the spoon! So we'll see how we go tonight...

Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this trapped wind so suddenly at this age?

how strange, i have noticed exactly the same thing with my 8 month old, i will definitely try feeding on the right hand side, thanks WilfSell
