3 year old kicks off blanket every single night - anyone else?

DD just turned 3 and has been out of her sleeping bag for a few months now. Every single night she kicks off her duvet and I find her freezing at 3am (hence the username 😅). I've tried tucking it in really tightly, using a lighter blanket thinking she's hot, even putting her in extra layers so it doesn't matter as much - but nothing really works.

She's too big for the sleeping bags we had and I'm not sure the bigger kid ones would go down well since she likes having her arms free and rolling around.

Is this just a phase? Did anyone else's DC go through this around 3-4? I feel like I'm the only one up in the middle of the night re-covering my child! At what age did yours finally keep a blanket on through the night?

Any tips welcome, I'm knackered!

You can get sleeping bags with legs and arms. Like a padded sleep suit. If she’s genuinely cold that might work.

Starrystarrysky · 07/03/2026 05:51

Yep! DD is still doing it at 6. In the end we got her a warm, fluffy onesie, so that when she inevitably kicks the blankets off, her clothes are enough to stop her freezing.

Nosleepforthismum · 07/03/2026 05:52

My nearly 3 year old is the same and she’s had a duvet since she was 2. Honestly, I just leave her, she’s perfectly capable of pulling her duvet if she gets cold and I try and put her in socks over winter but these are usually kicked off too 🙈

This blanket which fits under the mattress has been absolutely life changing for us- we had multiple wake ups from our 3 year old once he was out of sleeping bags, and he gets hot overnight really easily so we didn’t want anything too heavy

At 3 years old she's more than old enough to pull a duvet back over herself if she's cold. If she wakes crying for you to do it, I'd go to her and practise her doing it herself so she learns she can do it without you. But she shouldn't be in a sleeping bag at that age, especially if she doesn't like them. Getting a little cold won't hurt her and she might be getting too warm, so you don't want to make her warmer.

Roundofapause · 07/03/2026 06:29

My son has done this too. We did do the thick sleepsuits until he was 3/4. Now he's 4 and even when going to sleep, he'll constantly kick it off (purposefully) and then want it back on again. I think it's a gradual process of learning that a duvet is a normal feeling! I think they do also overheat a lot easier than we think. If they are too cold, they will wake up.

Londoner4 · 07/03/2026 06:32

My 3 year old does this. Turn the duvet sideways and tuck either end under the mattress. As she gets bigger, I’ll swap her cot bed duvet for a single.

My 4.5 year old still has the duvet like this as it means I get more sleep. Worked for my older two as well. By 5/6 they had learnt to pull the duvet up.

ShetlandishMum · 07/03/2026 06:35

Oh yes. Gave up. Wollen night clothes in winter. No problems.

PollyBell · 07/03/2026 07:08

I just let then get on with it why is it a problem?

HumberBridge2 · 07/03/2026 07:15

We use a tommee tippee Grobag with legs, plus a dressing gown. My LO hasn't got on with a duvet yet at all, they still move around too much in the night.

Hope you get more sleep soon!

Yes, mine still rarely has it on at 5. I just bought him warm PJs.

This. We go in when we go to sleep to make sure the duvet is still on my 2.5yo (in a bed with duvet since 18mo). But I found him under the bed the other night.

828Pax · 07/03/2026 07:26

Dd7 absolutely refuses a blanket and will only lay on top of it!

AppropriateAdult · 07/03/2026 07:36

I’d leave her to it. If she’s really cold she’ll wake up. My younger two usually kick it off at some point in the night, whereas the 12yo is completely huddled under it with only the top of her head visible.

SesameLeafChomper · 07/03/2026 07:48

You can get duvet covers that zip up like a giant sleeping bag with fitted sheet corners. If they get hot they just wriggle out of them.

We turned the duvet sideways and tucked it in under the mattress. I wonder if you didn't go in at 3am whether she would still be uncovered in the morning or whether she would have woken and got back under the covers. We have some fantastic photos of Ds2 in all sorts of positions on his bed whilst asleep. That child never stopped moving even in sleep.

EmbarrassmentLovesCompany · 07/03/2026 08:03

DS2 runs hot - as a teen he is currently sleeping under a 1.5tog duvet.... he'll be under just the duvet cover by late spring.

So I'd suggest getting a thinner duvet, do she doesnt overheat so quickly, and turning it through 90degrees. That allows you to tuck one side under the mattress, making it much easier to find at 3am.

LaMadrilena · 07/03/2026 08:06

My nearly 5yo is still in a sleep sack for this reason! I'd just leave her to it, but Spanish DH is convinced she'll get cold in her kidneys and get ill if her blankets come off...

whatthehelldowecare · 07/03/2026 08:09

My nearly 2 year old is the same, just moved to a duvet, but we just leave him to it. Put fluffy jammies and socks on him and it’s not disturbed his sleep
