Baby wailing ans shrieking pin his sleep

My 11 month old has started wailing in his sleep. We can't wake him easily but he won't be comforted because he's asleep. Sometimes it's full on shrieking for 20 minutes and I feel for our poor neighbours, as well as our sanity. He never cries like that when he's awake.

Has anyone had this? Did you find a solution or do we just have to wait it out? I hope he doesn't grow into a child plagued by nightmares, poor thing.

ETA: sorry about typos in title, my phone screen has gone mad

Could be night terrors? Not sure how common in younger babies but have a google. My older child had them and still can (18yrs!), especially if they are unwell/over heat during the night. It’s really horrible to watch but best to stay calm, keep lights low, speak gently to reassure until it passes… she doesn’t always even remember they happened.

It does feel like night terrors, but Google reckons that's vanishingly rare in babies. He's ill and learning to walk, so perhaps his poor little brain is short circuiting.

Definitely could be linked to illness - keeping any fever down should help, watch how many layers they are sleeping in etc. I feel for you, it’s horrible to watch them so distraught and feel helpless. Trust your instincts though - if not improving or doesn’t feel right get them checked out by the GP
