9 week old active sleep or waking?

My 9 week old has suddenly gone from sleeping soundly to waking every 15-20 minutes or every hour, depending on when and where she is sleeping.
I know babies sleep changes as they grow (this is my second DD) but I don’t remember such a 180 with my first!

She has gone from doing long stints at night (11.30pm until around 4/5am with a couple of wakes for the dummy) to now having her last bottle at 11 and fidgeting and waking from 2am…is this normal?

Her sleep has become very noisy and active. I’m aware babies make all sorts of noises but hers go from grunts to crying out and then full crying and waking herself up. Sometimes she sounds in pain it’s almost a squeal or like she’s having a bad dream. Has anyone else experienced similar with their baby?
Most of the time her eyes are still closed but like I mentioned she can wake herself up.

I am feeding responsively, she has 6oz every 4 hours during the day and is generally very content when awake, although can only really last about an 1 hour - 1 hour 15min.
I don’t think she’s too hot or too cold, her sleeping conditions haven’t changed.
is this just a normal regression/ growth spurt/ leap for her age? Can I be doing something more or checking anything else?

I'd say it was more unusual that she was doing such long stints initially - what you describe now sounds like much more typical baby sleep. They are sooo loud. It's like trying to sleep next to a warthog caught in a net.

No idea about leaps and what not - not a thing when I had mine. But that sounds very normal. The longer stint seemed more abnormal to me - I’m sure with mine we were supposed to feed every 4 hours or so. But guidelines may have changed. I was all ebf so may be different.

think the noise is normal too as they learn/dream and snuggle around. They’re on their backs a lot which doesn’t help. If her breathing becomes worrying though - pop her to GP or ask HV?

She is now FF (combi fed up until 6w) I checked with the HV re the longer stints at night when she was around 7 weeks, she said as she’s gaining weight and has carried on doing this steadily there’s so need to wake for feeds if she is sleeping.

She will sleep more soundly on me for her naps during the day or early morning so I am trying to put it down to a comfort thing. I did read that around 8 weeks they realise they’re separate from you so do need the extra help/comfort. I just wondered if anyone else noticed the extreme fussiness as it feels like it’s happened over night almost and naps/overnight sleep have completely changed

What’s her sleep environment like? Is she swaddled? Rocked/fed to sleep?

StarSB1712 · 19/01/2026 22:03

She’s in a love to dream swaddle bag. First morning nap is on me, then her further 2 naps she is rocked to sleep in the pram for one and then the other she is shushed/held/comforted to sleep flat on our bed in her swaddle bag or in her snuz pod.

The sleep she goes down for at 7pm after her bottle is in the pram and we feed again at 11 and put her straight down in her snuzpod so I do feel she is getting a good variety of independent sleep and less contact naps which I thought might help.

Sounds like you might be right about the 8 week thing. You seem to be doing a great job of getting her to nap so well done!!

no advice really - other than at this age it can change so frequently.
