Floor bed - appropriate age?

Our LO is nearly 10 months (will be at start of Jan) he used to be a really good sleeper but about 3 months ago totally changed. He started refusing his cot and in order to get some rest we took to co sleeping. My parenting philosophy is to be responsive to his needs to didn’t want to sleep train ideally. However, I really don’t enjoy co sleeping and just want my space back. I BF exclusively so really appreciate my time to stretch out in bed. Long story short, we’ve been thinking about a floor bed. It means no transfer for him to wake and I can get in, feed him, then return to my bed. Has anyone got any experience of them? At what age did your LO go in one? Would you recommend? I’m worried about him getting out and moving about but I suppose if his room is child proofed it’s not a problem once they reach a certain age? I’ve attached a picture of one for reference. Thanks in advance!😀

We’ve just got one for our 14 month old (she can walk). I co-sleep the last few hours of the night, not necessarily planning to stop this but want it to feel safer (worried she’ll fall out our bed!) and to start spending the whole night in her own room. Weve secured the chest of drawers to the wall. So far she hasn’t got out herself, when she’s woken shes just sat up and cried. We put cushions around in case she fell out

Thank you for this. Of course we’d need to make sure everything was safe for him. I suppose it blows my mind that he may just be alone in his room without me making sure he’s okay. But I guess that’s normal for his age? FT mum and trying to figure it all out!

My ds had a floor bed at 10 months. He had sleep apnoea and rarely slept so it meant i could get in with him and feed to settle before sneaking back to bed.

We made sure his room was safe with everything except a few books and soft toys put away in the cupboard locked with a child lock and a baby gate on the doorway so we didn't have to close the door and could hear him.

He had a baby monitor out of reach so we could hear if he was up and moving about.

We didn't do blankets or pillows until over 1 - but got thick padded sleep suits for winter/cold weather - like these https://www.next.co.uk/style/su692525/h20050?gclsrc=aw.ds&gadsource=1&gaddcampaignid=9262941997&gbraid=0AAAAADm5UWHjNQF-nytHm-3UYpAAzCVF&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8GwrtvZkQMVnpdQBh0nMD07EAQYCiABEgLi55DBwE

Definitely recommend. My first went in at 12m and my second either has a sidecar cot on my bed or a floor bed. They have neither got out and explored, just sit up and wail when they want us! So while
babyproofing is of course important, mine weren’t roaming around. My advice would be to get a double
so if you fall asleep in there too you are comfy! Was/is fairly frequent with both kids at times. No need for a fancy one, we just cut the legs of a wooden double bed frame and attached a wooden bed rail to the edge. We initially had a single house bed one, but more effort than worth.

it makes bf at bedtime/in the night a doddle as you can just feed fhem lying downnnext to them and then extricate yourself without having to transfer them. Big fans!

Worst thing ever bought in our house! We have the one in the picture and bought for the co sleeping and ease at 10 months but my dd just gets out and wanders and then falls asleep behind the door. I can’t sleep because I can’t settle and I wish I’d bought a cot bed. Using a travel cot with a mattress to get some sleep for now and will try again when shes a bit older, she’s almost 2 ☹️

Thanks for this. LO already uses a sleeping bag so hopefully this would be an easy transition for him.

Thanks for this. This is exact what I’m hoping for. DH has taken to sleeping in the floor whilst we co sleep so I’m hoping sleep will improve for everyone

Thanks to this. I had read that the freedom can excite the child and cause disruption to sleep. I’m worries I won’t sleep a wink for checking the monitor but I don’t know if he would want to explore in the night. He doesn’t usually have split nights (not for months) and actually just cries for me hence he wakes. I have seen ones with high sides but they’re out £500!

if you haven't already have a look at The Happy Cosleeper on Instagram. She has lots of recommendations for floor beds and how to transition a baby/toddler to one safely.
