Do all babies have sleep regression?

Just this really! My little girl is 17 weeks. We’ve been really happy with her sleep.

She will have three naps a day 1-1.5hrs and be asleep for the night from 8pm-7am (when I wake her for a feed). No wake ups at night and she’s slept straight through since 10 weeks.
Shes also showing signs of self soothing when falling asleep or waking temporarily.

However I am terrified of the dreaded four month sleep regression. Do babies who are naturally good sleepers also have sleep regression? If so what are the signs it’s going to happen?

thank you ☺️

They're not regressions as such but it does go up and down. After 6 months, they start teething. Some babies are fine, some take it really badly and don't sleep well. Weaning helps some sleep better, but for others it can upset their tummies. Separation anxiety sets in around 7-8 months and they start realizing you're leaving the room. They also start getting ill frequently as you naturally take them out more. My son started walking at 10 months and I had to take him to all kinds of soft play etc as he is a ball of energy, and immediately started catching every bug out there. And that fucks up sleep too.

Or you might be fortunate with a chill potato baby who isn't too bothered. My friend's baby sleeps 11 hours a night since she was 3 months old, almost never disturbs them in the night. She's almost 3. A chill potato at night and a terror in the day 😂

Honestly, DS2 never did. He slept from 7pm until 5am from 6 weeks. He’d have a feed at 5am & go back to sleep until around 8am. There was no regression even during teething.

DS1 was a nightmare & just didn’t sleep much at all. DD was somewhere between the two with definite regressions at certain points.

Not overly helpful I know!

Thanks for your messages.
I think there are too many factors to really know what will happen. I think I should just enjoy the moment as we’ve been blessed with a baby who sleeps for the time being.

My 3 DC didn’t.

DS never had sleep regression, but then I followed the Gina Ford sleep schedule (controversial on here) and he pretty much slept when she said they would.

It’s only when he was older I heard about sleep regression was even a thing. So not all babies no.

It’s also true of excessive burping, Gina said hold them over your shoulder a gentle tap and that’s it, I barely burped my son in his life, he slept fine always and wasn’t really sick.

Exactly this. TBF as I read your original post i thought "why are you terrified? Even if her sleep does get bumpy you will approach it well-rested!

All babies’ sleep will change, it will just vary in timing / what that looks like. Just enjoy it for now! You can’t do anything about it; can you? So
many things will affect sleep; just do whatever works and don’t worry

PumpkinSparkleFairy · 24/12/2025 18:56

No sleep regressions here - I’ve not seen any convincing evidence of them myself, wouldn’t worry!

Ihaveoflate · 24/12/2025 19:13

My daughter didn't have any sleep regressions as a baby and slept through from about 5 months.

Her sleep spectacularly fell apart, however, when she was nearly two and she still doesn't sleep through now at 6 years old.

Enjoy the good sleep while you can because it's not linear. It will likely have good and bad patches for all sorts of reasons. Or the sleep may remain really good - you just never know.

andanotherproblem · 24/12/2025 19:14

No I don’t believe all babies do, I genuinely believe there’s good sleepers and bad sleepers. My DD has been a terrible sleeper from the minute she was born, she’s now 1.5 and we constantly go through regressions/teething/colds and then go back to lovely sleep and then it hits again, some friends babies have slept perfect from just a few weeks old

Punkerplus · 26/12/2025 22:34

I think the four month one is the only proven "regression" as such but it isn't actually a regression as such as a permanent change in their sleep cycles.

Apart from that there seems to be regressions each month from what you read! Babies sleep does go up and down the first year and they have can have disturbed nights when they learn new skills but it doesn't last.

Neither of mine really had a four-month regression. They maybe had a week or so where they were more wakeful but it passed quickly and wasn't anything like the horror stories you read here and my eldest who's 3 never went through any of these regressions you read either!

SpruceMoose · 26/12/2025 22:40

My 2nd didn't have any sleep regressions. Slept through the night (10pm-7am) from 3 weeks old. Now 2yrs 9 months, still has a nap and sleeps 11-12 hours a night. Has been a thumb sucker from being tiny which seems to have really helped with self soothing etc.
My first was very different, hit every sleep regressions going, awake for hours when teething and is still an earlier riser not mater what time they go to bed.

usedtobeaylis · 26/12/2025 22:44

I don't really think of it as 'regression' - it's more on line with developmental progression. There are general ways this shows up in babies, but not all babies, and that includes changes in sleep. My daughter was and is an excellent, heavy sleeper but she had spells where her sleep was disturbed or changed.

mondaytosunday · 26/12/2025 23:00

Mine didn’t.

TheFluffiestCat · 26/12/2025 23:04

Mine didn’t have regressions. From 3 months there was a steady trajectory of increased sleep, and by 6 months she was reliably doing approx 7pm-6am. There were disturbed nights, especially when she was teething, but we could always work out what the problem was, if not at the time then within a couple of days of it.
