Newborn eats and sleeps during the day and at night is up crying and getting red and stressed, despite me trying everything I’m doing a full all nighter as he doesn’t stop crying. He tried chewing his swaddle (love to dream)

Despite being given formula at night because he seemed so hungry chewing on his fist or swaddle and crying a lot he just doesn’t stop all night. Me and husband are sleep deprived and falling asleep whilst holding baby. Help is this normal? He also vomits up all his food, doctors have given all clear on his bloods etc. he just constantly vomits up his milk whether breast or formula

Perhaps he is overfed with the formula. It does pass though; newborns don't know night from day.

This is really normal for newborns - how new is he?

For the first few weeks days and nights were a blur with mine. We just caught moments of sleep where we could. Many many nights were spent holding and feeding.

If you're breastfeeding then night feeds are really important to build up your supply. Cluster feeding is also really normal and again is all about building supply.

Does he calm down if given free access to the breast and allowed to feed pretty much constantly? If so then roll with it. As he builds up your supply the feeding frenzy will calm down and he will start to space out his feeds.

When you say he vomits "all his food" what sort of volume are we talking? Some babies are just pukey and it does look like a lot but considering they have an entirely liquid diet, and that what comes up is mixed with spit, it's usually not really as much as it looks!

These first weeks don't last forever and things do start to settle into some sort of pattern, I promise.

Consider cmpa.

You need to get them as much daylight as possible too otherwise their circadian rhythms don't set and they do end up awake all night.

Babies feed over night because that’s when women’s body produce the hormones needs for milk production. Babies are progarmmed to be fussy and feed over night because they need to bf to increase Mum’s supply for the next few days.

How much are you feeding him? Any chance you’re over feeding? If not then being sick would indicate reflux, maybe also CMPA as they are often linked to- you need to see the GP. Also the chewing the swaddle probably means they dislike being swaddled and/or want to suck their thumb. My DD did that, put her in a sleeping bag instead, she sucked her thumb and slept through the night.

Sounds like it could be tongue tie? My daughter had this.
awful and so stressful. Getting it sorted was a game changer

He’s probably not tired if he’s been napping all day. DS did this & it took 6 weeks to get him to stay awake during the day. It was hard work as I’d turn away & he’d be asleep again. But I tried hard to keep him awake for longer stretches & it finally clicked. Once he was staying awake longer during the day he was able to sleep all night. His bedtime got gradually earlier & once he was sleeping at night it was easier to keep him awake in the day.

How old in weeks is he? Newborns don’t understand day / night sleep for a while maybe 3ish months. Hence the sleeping more during the day than night he has his schedule mixed up. My DS was like this until 2.5 months then slept long stretches of about 5 hours at night until 3.5 months then the sleep regression hit and even now (he’s 7m) he’s up every 2 hours at night. He was also BF but vomitted so much compared to DD I was worried about reflux. Drs weren’t concerned and he grew out of it around 3 months too. He is still sick a bit after feeds but no where near as much as he was previously

Are you winding them enough before you put them down?

RabbitsEatPancakes · 13/12/2025 00:40

Normal for all of mine, we tagged in and out for the nights. I fed and DH slept, then he did bums and burps and I slept.

Lots of vomit but is it a full feed or just a bit?
Mix feeding can make them quite gassy i think unless you're ina good rhythm. Sort of easier to just breastfeed a newborn until everything's established. They just want to cluster feed when tiny.
