My 22mo sleeps til at least 8, always has (since he started sleeping through at about 7 months), sometimes til 10 or later if the house is quiet

He goes to bed between 8 and 8.30 generally

Maybe you need to shift her bedtime a bit?

upallnightagain · 06/06/2008 14:16

She usually goes to bed between 7pm and 7.30pm . When we have tried later times she is till up at silly o'clock ....I think I will try 8 pm to 8.30pm over weekend . However dd has always been a bad sleeper . She only started sleeping through at 15 months .

my DS's wakeups are a total mystery to me (he's 24 mo) - it never seems to correlate with his bed time or state of exhaustion - I've come to the conclusion it's completely random.

I assume you're tried blackout blinds etc? The early morning sun definitely seems to make it worse round our way...

theyoungvisiter · 06/06/2008 14:20

PS my DS does 8pm - 7am mostly, and he didn't sleep through until about 20 months. He has NEVER slept beyond 8.30am, ever, ever, ever.

I think some babies just need less sleep than others sadly. Boo...

EffiePerine · 06/06/2008 14:21

Have you got blackout blinds? DS was doing this (waking 5ish), installed blinds, slept till 7:15 this morning

he also had a longer bedtime routine last night (thanks to DH installing said blind) so that might have helped as well.

DS also only slept through from 15 mo.

upallnightagain - I wouldn't shift her bedtime. If we do that with dd1, her sleeping is just worse as she's mor tired.

My dd1 has always been an early riser, but finally, now she is four years old, is is beginning to learn to stay in her bedroom until 6:30-7am, playing on her own. It's a difficult situation to solve.

belgo · 06/06/2008 14:24

agree with black out blinds - we have very heavy curtains in her bedroom to keep it as dark as possible.

Ecmo · 06/06/2008 14:26

try these

theyoungvisiter · 06/06/2008 14:26

oh, also if you have already tried blackout blinds, try shutting/sound-proofing the window too.

DS has a tree outside his window and the birds come and do a lovely dawn chorus at about 5am in summer, which is actually extremely loud and more than capable of waking him up. I installed thicker curtains (as well as the blackout blinds) and it helped a little bit.

belgo · 06/06/2008 14:28

and when she wakes up, keep your voice very low, tell her it's time to go back to sleep, don't look her in the eye, do nothing to stimulate her - certainly don't turn on any lights.

gingerninja · 06/06/2008 14:28

UAN, my DD rarely sleeps past 5.30am and changing bed time makes no difference. Is she sleeping too much during the day? I've started to limit my 21 month old DD's sleep during the day to 1 hour because I think she sleeps a bit better at night as a result.

castille · 06/06/2008 14:30

oh yes we are in France so have shutters that block out every chink of light, I'm sure it helps

If you're changing bedtimes don't expect it to work instantly - make it gradual and stick with it - one weekend is nothing like enough, just make it her normal bedtime from now on

None of my 3 have ever woken early, but they never went to bed before 8pm

micci25 · 06/06/2008 14:35

my one year old has recently changed her waking habits from 8ish to between 5:30 and 6 am! but if she doesnt realise that i am awake she will usually play with her toys/teddies in her cot and fall back to sleep about an hour later.

so maybe leaving some musical soft toys in her cot of soft books (those fabric ones) she may just play for a while?

CoteDAzur · 06/06/2008 17:03

Feed her something before you put her to bed at 8 PM - a banana? a toast with cream cheese? - and see if that makes a difference in when she wakes up.

DD used to wake up at silly o'clock. We ignored her and now she wakes up between 8-9 AM She goes to bed towards 9 PM, though.

SIOBHANB2008 · 06/06/2008 22:42

i know a two year who went through a phrase of waking up 9.30-10! when going to bed at 6.30pm that was when she has just learnt to walk about a month ago but still now gets up at about 8.30! its alrite for some!

upallnightagain · 08/06/2008 20:59

Hi everyone , Thanks for all your replies ..Ecmo - on my way to purchase some handcuffs - chuckle !! We have now put her bedtime to 8pm and she has woken up about 6.30 so a bit later . Also have just bought a black out blind and curtains !! I also will try giving her bannana before bed .
