Exhausted baby won’t settle in Next2Me/Moses Basket

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on getting my little one to sleep in her Next2Me or Moses basket (1 month old). She’ll happily nod off in my arms, but the second I put her down she wakes almost straight away. She’s also constantly grunting and pulling her legs up, which makes me wonder if that could be part of the problem.

The sleep deprivation is really starting to take its toll—I feel like I’m on the verge of tears most of the time. Any tips, tricks, or reassurance would be so appreciated right now. I obviously don’t expect a full nights sleep but an hour here or there would be nice.

I never mastered the transfer with either of mine. Do try a dummy and swaddle. I know not everyone agrees but I don’t think you need to instantly respond to every murmur and if they’re crying I’d always give it a minute (literally just a minute, it’s far too young for sleep training) to see if they’re winding down or getting more upset. If it’s escalating obviously pick them up and comfort them. But one of mine would always cry, and it was a very specific cry so I learned to tell the difference quite quickly, for a minute or so but if left alone would then fall asleep and sleep for hours. Other people swear by co-sleeping and it’s worth looking into how to do it safely especially if you think you might be at risk of doing it accidentally through sleep deprivation. Failing all else do you have a partner and can you take shifts depending on feeding routine to get at least one proper chunk a night?

Have you tried warming up the crib/basket before putting the baby in? My son constantly woke up when transferred and it was the cool mattress. Popping a wheat bag on the mattress for a few minutes beforehand made all the difference to mine

Also, the grunting thing could be wind. Try cycling her legs which should help

All I would say is make sure baby is winded really well, swaddle and my husband used to put a hot water on the sheet, so the transition from me to a cold sheet wasn’t such a shock. It’ll pass, baby is still only teeny tiny. Persevere and one night you’ll be so shocked it worked, you still won’t sleep as you’ll keep checking are they breathing?! Are they ok!? It’ll get easier x
