Owlet & newborn active sleep

we bought the owlet when I was still pregnant but have yet to use it with our 3 week old. She’s a very active sleep with lots of grunting, wriggling and leg kicks even when her eyes a shut tight. This is something we’re really struggling with as we cannot get much sleep and therefore take it in terms to sleep in the other bedroom. My concern is the awake alarm of the owlet going off whenever she’s in active sleep and it causing us more anxiety/worse sleep. Anyone have any experience with the owlet and active sleeping babies?

That all sounds like very normal baby sleep, they are incredibly loud. It's like having a baby warthog in the bed. It's really important that you don't both sleep separately from her though and just rely on the owlet - it's your breathing that helps regulate hers. I'd get some earplugs. You'll still hear her if she cries but it'll muffle the grunts.

I found white noise a good way of cancelling out some of the noises too

@SpringadorableI really had no idea how loud babies were in their sleep 😂 will try more white noise. Hubby and I take it in turns to sleep in another room but one of us is always with her. I’ve not tried earplugs yet I’m a little paranoid that I will sleep through a bad reflux or something when she’s on her back but my sanity will have to come first now I think. When did you find active sleep to get lessen?

Was a total shock to me too.

Was a shock again 4 years later with my second. They're so loud!

I reckon they get less grunty at around three months, and then much much more bearable at around six months. But yeah, who knew a tiny human could be so crazily noisy while asleep!

Went through the same thing with our little one. she was super squirmy, and we couldn’t tell if she was awake or just in active sleep. We’ve used the Owlet since week 2, and the awake alarm doesn’t trigger from wriggling, only from real changes in heart rate or oxygen.

Lolayu7 · 09/09/2025 07:38

We have the Owlett. It won't wake you up /alarm if it thinks she's awake / moving a lot . It only sounds if the oxygen or heart rate dip to low or it can't get signal .

My youngest is for now so memory a little hazy but doesn’t Owlet have a different alarm if it comes loose? From memory I think it plays a twinkly nursery rhyme. So it’s not the shock you’d get from an actual breathing alert. Which we thankfully never had no matter wriggly they were.

We use an owlet. Found sticking a normal sock over the owlet keeps it in place. Occasionally it has moved but not often at all.
