Hi,

My baby is exactly the same, 5.5 weeks old.

He does his longest stretch early on, today it was 7.30pm to 10.30pm, so I try and go to bed as early as possible when he does. He then woke up at 12.30, 2 something, 3 something and 4 something.

Often my husband will do the midnight feed to allow me a longer stretch (he is BF but has 1 formula bottle), and will also get up with him at 6 something I can get an hour or two more sleep.

The constant grunting is really annoying - google infant dyschezia. They do grow out of it and it will get better in a few weeks, my first baby was the same. I sometimes wonder if it’s because I haven’t winded him enough throughout the night maybe?

I really like the Instagram account called heysleepybaby

hioe it gets better for you soon, I’m sure it will

Totally normal. It’s a myth babies will sleep for long stretches. They are so tiny and with a tiny stomach that needs regular feeding but also regular contact with parent through the night reduces cot death (hence why babies should sleep in your room)

I still don't get 4-6 hour stretches and mine is 10 months! Totally normal I'm afraid OP. Snatch the rest when you can and if you have a partner make sure they're doing their fare share.

@5weekold ahhh really when do they grow out of it! So hard to function the next day ! So the grunting and squirming is cause if digestion ??

My baby was the same but he was born 5 weeks premature. His sleep should lengthen soon. Hang in there and get someone to take over while you nap if you can

Rowen32 · 24/08/2025 06:14

It's totally normal including the noises. I wouldn't say its always indigestion, little babies are just noisy sleepers

Anyadvicewelcom · 24/08/2025 06:18

@5weekold ye I also thought maybe cause im
not burping enough cause he looks like he is squirming to get something out? Does urs look the same?

Yes normal unfortunately. My dd started to sleep slightly longer stretches at 12 weeks, but took ages to get up to 4-6 hour stretches.

Anyadvicewelcom · 24/08/2025 07:53

Ah really ?! They just look so uncomfortable squirming and lifting legs - looks like trying to Get a fart out all night

I think the grunting, if it is dyschezia (straining for a poo because they haven’t learnt how to coordinate bowels yet) usually stops by 12 weeks or before. My other son it just stopped one day and I forgot all about it, until now! Some people wear earplugs to block out the grunting, as you would probbaly still hear any proper crying through the earplugs. Try and get as much sleep during the day as possible although that’s really hard too. It will pass
