Newborn day vs night sleep

Hi All,

im just curious as to what others routines are with your newborns.

Our little one is due in October and we have a next to me ready for the night and a Moses basket for downstairs during the day.

granted baby will actually sleep in these I suppose..during the day, are you using a sleeping bag for there naps given most the day is spent sleeping initially or are you just make sure they are clothed correctly for just the moses basket? Or swaddling/ using a blanket? What’s most practical given they are just inbetween sleep and small wake windows early days?

thankyou! X

During the day newborn will sleep in your arms / on you (after a feed), in the moses basket, in the pram, in the baby carrier. Newborns sleep a lot but it's still active participation on your part.

In the dayu baby would sleep in a onesie in a bassinet in the living room. We would make the living room at a perfect temperature for his clothing.

At night my baby would sleep in a onesie (night one tog rated) plus a tog rated sleeping bag inside his own cot. My baby never liked being swaddled.

Whatever they're wearing will be fine. Add a blanket if it's very chilly, you'll have them in the same room as you so you'll be able to keep an eye on the blanket. You can tuck it under their arms for added safety until they start moving around more. But really, their clothes should keep them warm enough.

You might find a sling more practical at first - newborns don't tend to like being put down, so it's sling or trapped on the sofa.

No, you don’t usually swaddle/sleeping bag in the day until they’re big enough for one or two big, predictable naps - and most people don’t even then, you leave it as an indicator it’s the big night sleep.

My first hated sleeping bags passionately and never slept in one, but enjoyed a swaddle until he was a few months old. My second hates swaddling too and sleeps free. She doesn’t even really like a blanket. All babies are different but you’ll figure out what works for you!

When DS was a newborn, he mainly slept on me. On the rare occasion that he allowed me to put him down, he’d have fallen asleep on me already and so I would transfer him and then lie a cellular blanket over the top of him. We didn’t put him down while he was awake for naps for ages (probably a year or so!) and until then, I never changed him or put him in a sleeping bag because it would have woken him.

I kept mine in a sleeping bag a lot of the day, sometimes with legs unzipped. It was much easier than trying to deal with trousers or sleepsuit legs for changing, and was easy if I needed to put him down! I sometimes put him in it without a vest so that I could unzip it for skin to skin but he was still wrapped up warm. One we could stay going for walks, we'd both get dressed and out of our pyjamas (sleeping bag) then, although I used a sleeping bag in the pram a lot too, but with clothes under. I never swaddled mine

No didn’t bother with the sleeping bag because newborn naps are frequent and unpredictable in length! They also need to learn the difference between day and night and having noticeable differences in routine can help with this. We used a cellular blanket as needed during the day.
