Screaming and pulling at nappy only at night - threadworm?

Please any help with my 15 month old before we see the GP tomorrow...

She has woken up the past 3 nights VERY upset, wriggling, pulling at her nappy. She is absolutely fine during the day. As of this morning she hadn't pood in 3 days so last night we thought it was that that was getting to her, but today she pood and it was fine (so sign of constipation) as far as I can see her symptoms it could be threadworm? especially as only bothering her at night? We've looked in nappy and can't see anything but read that doesn't necessarily mean they don't have it...

Yeah, that might be threadworms 😭. So, back in the day I got advice from here… nighttime shine a torch at baby’s bum and if they’re there you see them wriggling out. Wipe them away and slap some Vaseline around the area to stop them. Then get Ovex (I think) from Boots etc and they disappear quite quickly.

Thank you! Ive shone a light tonight but couldn't really see I don't think. We also looked back at the earlier poo (the things you do as a parent....) but no sign of any. She was screaming when I looked at her tonight though so I might not have looked long or hard enough. Started reading about there being no medicine for under 2s but we can't let her go on like this just being hygienic and hoping for the best.

Bloated stomach at night? Is her nappy maybe too tight and she's incredibly uncomfortable.

She has been in current size nappy for a while so I was thinking she may be ready for next size, though I've been conscious of keeping it not too tight. She does have a little pot belly anyway! I think we will size up now too regardless.

I’d be thinking threadworms too, they can get ovex under 2 but it needs to be through a GP prescription (maybe this is only my GP procedure) I’m not sure but yes, ovex will hopefully clear that right up! And also, they get the same dose and everything it’s only just because they need to know if under 2 is getting it recurrently (I think that’s what they said!)
if not, could it be thrush? Hotter at night, more itchy!

VeryStressedMum · 10/08/2025 21:59

I would take her nappy off when she does that to see if she calms down or see what she’s trying to do to work out what’s bothering her.

It will be the threadworms, they are difficult to spot but will usually be visible around 2am.

Worms can irritate the intestinal wall as they move around, which may causes cramping.

Pick up Ovex from a chemist

sellotapechicken · 10/08/2025 22:08

Worms also go into the vagina / vulval area which is painful for them. You won’t see them in poo

VeryStressedMum · 10/08/2025 22:35

If you suspect threadworms put some Vaseline in the area until you can get to the pharmacy.

Oh Jeez, I wish I hadn't read this ....

If it is threadworms treat EVERYONE and EVERYTHING

Yes totally. Everyone must be treated, everywhere hoovered toys washed, bedding changed and washed.
And repeat the treatment after 2 weeks that’s very important

MeganM3 · 10/08/2025 22:58

Sounds like it could be worms. Give the liquid asap. Not sure if pharmacist can give it for a baby or if you need to see the GP but poor little one needs it as soon as possible (as do you)

Melissac88 · 11/08/2025 19:04

She's had the medication today around lunchtime. Anyone know how long it takes to settle? She went to bed ok but half hour in seems uncomfortable again. Put loads of vaseline on and gave Calpol to cover anything else

She's also started to get a tiny bit of cough through the evening so now I'm wondering if I've got it all completely wrong

Hmm, it probably needs some time. The symptoms you described in your op feel like the dreaded threadworms, but she might be a little under the weather anyway. I would guess two separate things going on. Poor little girl, and you x

The more I read about trapped wind and teething coinciding the more I think that's a possibility too. She was chewing on her finger both sides earlier today and woke up upset from her nap early which isn't like her. But she so looks like she has some signs of discomfort in her lower half, the way her movement is at night!! She passed quite a bit of wind earlier when she first woke up after going to bed, and then settled pretty much straight away. But we've been up several times since, like she's trying to push out and won't be put down either.
