really stuck on this one - need help URGENTLY

most travel cots are 100cm long but some i have noticed like cosatto one and mamasandpapas vogue are 120cm long - basically cot size

have a tallish baby but

when do babies start crawling out of playpens?....do you really need a cot size travel cot or would you get away with standard 100cm...

how much use would standard 100cm size give me for a tallish baby of 10 months? few months or would it really last till two years of age?

cot size travel cots are just so bulky and a pain in order to get extra mattress...but perhaps last longer??

though am curious will you actually use a cot size travel cot when a baby is 2 years old or do they actually hate it by then?

hope thread makes sense...

small travel cot or big travel cot?

would you actually use big travle cot - or what is alternative? sleeping bag?

when do toddlers sleep in beds?

HELP

I have a Cossatto 40 Winks for dd. No reason really, I just loved the look of it. She's 4.5 months and sleeps in it in our room as she outgrew her moses basket.

She loves it but I did buy a mattress for it as it seemed very uncomfortable without a proper one. It's fine when we travel in the UK but going abroad she'll just have to do without. The cot on its own is not bulky in the slightest when folded up. I love it, it's dead easy to set up and put away.

Can't speak from experience but SIL has a standard 100cm travel cot and her youngest still uses it when away. She's 2.5yo.

DS is 2 and quite big, but still fits into a standard travel cot with no problems. Ours is certainly tall enough that theres no way he could climb out of it, and is quite happy to sleep in it (but is still in a cot anyway).

Once he's in a bed, we'll just use an airbed when away.

gnu · 28/05/2008 21:34

DD is too long for our travel cot. I wish we'd got a 120cm one. She's still in a cot and would happily use a travel cot.

I had a standard sized travel cot which was fine for average sized DD1 and DD2, only used once a year on holiday up until 18 and 20mths and then next year they were in the bed as 2yrs or over. For DS who was huge I borrowed a larger (not sure of measurements) one made by Hauck and it was a life saver as he was only 20mths so not quite in a bed yet but way too small for our standard travel cot. I would say go for a larger one if you think your boy is going to be big. I think you would use it until about 2yrs maybe more, I have friends who's DC have not moved out of their cots until nearer 3yrs, all mine have been a few months over 2yrs. HTH

I had a Samsonite pop up cot for birth - 18 months old and both DS (almost 2) and DD(just 4) loved sleeping in it until they were 15 months apiece. Folds completely flat, then springs out at you!

Also have regular, large travel cot which DS sleeps in at least once per week at his Nan's house. He can't climb out of it as he sleeps in a Grobag thing. Have been completely happy with both products.

I would go for larger one. My DD is tall and outgrew our 100cm before she was 2, then you have to faff about with those awful ready bed things until they are able to sleep in a proper bed. Much easier if they can go from one straight to the other. If you want a comfier mattress Mothercare do the matress toppers to give some extra padding.

Notyummy · 29/05/2008 12:43

Another vote for larger one. We have a 120cm Hauck one that we bought new off ebay and dd has always been happy in it, and still is at 22 months. Have used it A LOT as we live a distance from friends and family and so travel to see people a lot. It has also been used to accommodate various visiting babies and toddlers at our house. It is fairly heavy, but def worth it. Think it cost about £40 new in late 06.

mothercare doesnt do an extra topper for cot size though...

that is one worry i have as dont want to lug aorund a full blown mattress.but they do have topper for 100cm

argh!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've never used a topper, just folded a big fleecey throw up to the right shape, tucked it firmly in round the edges and then put a sheet on top.

EyeballsintheSky · 29/05/2008 21:32

LOL bumbly, I went straight over to Mothercare's site as soon as wingandprayer wrote that as I really want something that will fold up with the travel cot. Can't find anything similar on t'internet either. Sounded perfect as well.

PInkyminkyohnooo · 29/05/2008 21:42

I got the travel mattress from mothercare, it's really good, and folds up inside the travel cot.

wingandprayer · 29/05/2008 22:37

Oh god, very sorry!!!

I must admit I got mine for my 100 cm cot and didn't give it a second thought they wouldn't have larger ones. You know what Mothercare's like, got a forty different pastel shades of bedding in about 35 different bed configurations....(And yet I always manage to pick up the one sodding thing on the shelf that's not the size I'm after and then get it all the way home before realising. Oops whole other story.)

Apologies to all those who charged off to Mothercare.

EyeballsintheSky · 29/05/2008 22:51

Forgiven W&P

Although all might not be lost. As I am a lazy cow like things to look neat, I always use fitted sheets. If I got a 100cm one and put it on top of the mattress and then fitted the sheet over it, it would be quite comfy, wouldn't it? There would be a 10cm gap either end but as the mattress isn't very thick it's not like dd would get her head wedged down a gap?

Might be an option if I can't find a similar one in the right size. Or I could sew two together (desperate? Me?)....

PInkyminkyohnooo · 29/05/2008 22:53

Oh I didn't notice that either! I've got a very old petite star travel cot, I think the mattress is a little small for it, but I wrap a fleecy coverlet over it and it seems fine- it's not that thick but just pads the cot nicely, I think.
DS at 2 was in a readybed, he is very tall. DD is more dinky and will still be in travel cot.

There is the nomad bed

PInkyminkyohnooo · 29/05/2008 22:57

You might be able to get one of the self-inflating mattresses for it separately- would that fit your cot?

PInkyminkyohnooo · 29/05/2008 22:59

here

seeker · 29/05/2008 23:05

we never used a travel cot - we had a variety of things a small inflatable mattress that we bought in the States, a small cot mattress we put in the corner od a room on the floor. In hotels we used to take a mattress off a bed ant put it on the floor for dcs to sleep on.

But we never had a cot at home either.

shrinkingsagpuss · 29/05/2008 23:06

Our Ds slept in a travel cot til he was 2 and a bit when we went awy. no problems (although to be fiar, he did have to sleep on the diagnol to fit!!)
