Hello! I’m looking into getting a few of the love to dream swaddles for our November baby and just wanted wanted to get some suggestions of those who had winter babies as to what togs to get and quantities please?! I’ve no concept of how warm or cool our room would be at that time of year so feeling a bit mind boggled!
thanks ☺️

Hi! Congratulations, and snap, I’m also having a November baby. My oldest was only born last April so still very much remember the tog situation and my honest answer would be- it really depends on your house which is not particularly helpful I know! Do you live in a newer home or an older one, and what is your insulation like?

Our house is a new build so new insulation and lots of it, it’s a pretty hot house! We have had a temperature egg thing since our daughter was born and I’ve never seen it get below 17 degrees in our house, even in the winter we can have the heating on for an hour in the morning and it keeps the house warm then all day so we never needed more than a 2.5tog, usually 1.5tog is fine for our house though generally.

My parents house is an older house and it does get really cold overnight in the winter though so if she was staying there I’d be inclined to go for 3.5tog.

Thank you, congrats also! Our house is circa 1950s but it is insulated, we have the heating on morning and evening and have a feeling we’ll probably have it on for longer once baby is here just to keep things at a nice temperature! Perhaps I could go for a 2.5 and a 1.5 and see how I go. Did you just have one of each or multiples of the same so you can wash and wear? Thanks again x

With the swaddles I’d really recommend just getting one of each until baby is here because some babies just hate them and won’t tolerate them, if that’s the case for you then at least you haven’t wasted too much money on them!

At most though we just had 2 of each tog so that we had a spare x

Agree with this, one of my DC only slept arms up and the other needed arms swaddled down.

If you're open to it then definitely worth checking eBay/vinted for second hand ones as there are often quite a few that have hardly been used.

On the temperature, DC1 was a January baby - there was thick snow for 2 weeks straight and we never needed thicker than a 2.5 tog.

Great advice thank you both!

We had the 2.5 tog grobag snuggle for our winter baby. It has poppers on the arm holes so you can close them and use it as a swaddle or open them and use it as a normal sleeping bag. So all bases covered. If the room temp varies a bit you can adjust what they wear underneath as needed (from memory there’s an easy chart- google it). The love to dream was a good weight for my summer baby but she didn’t get on with it as she wanted to suck her thumb. I don’t think it would do for winter unless your house is very warm and it’s also less versatile than the gro snuggle so I wouldn’t recommend.

Agree on all advice above, including on getting a Tommee Tippee groegg or similar before baby arrives so you can get an idea of your house temperature. There are lots going second hand on Vinted usually :)

Also agree on the advice about buying some different ones and not stocking up too much in case your LO doesn’t take to them at all. My DS (6 months) has always slept in a sleep sack but never loved the swaddle aspect with arms in. Ones with this as an option like the Tommee Tippee (I swear I don’t work for them lol) grobag are good for this reason, although even as a newborn the grobag didn’t fit my son well. He was a neck scruncher, so it always felt tight on him there.

Also my son had a routine check of his hips when he was born and radiographer was quick to warn us not to use any “swaddle sacks” that don’t have national society of hip dysplasia accreditation. Just an FYI :)
